FACTS
Norway in a nutshell®
Season: Daily, all year
Duration: One day or more
The first foreign tourists came to the fjords of Western
Norway already in the late 19th century. Today, you can
rediscover many of the places they visited on the round trip
’Norway in a nutshell®’. Of course, it took them a lot longer
to get around in the olden days.
This trip takes you through some of Fjord Norway’s most
beautiful scenery. The trip includes the beautiful Bergen
Railway, the breathtaking Flåm Railway, the Aurlandsfjord
and the narrow Nærøyfjord, which is on UNESCO’s World
Heritage List. If you are lucky, you might spot seals basking
on the smooth rocks along the fjord. The trip also includes the
impressive Stalheimskleiva road with its steep and spectacular
hairpin bends.
Plan stops en route!
A day trip or a trip over several days? You choose. We
recommend combining the trip with Fjord Pass® which entitles
you to discounts on accommodation and activities all year.

On board the Hurtigruten coastal express from Ålesund, you can enjoy
a pleasant sea voyage to the Hjørundfjord. We moor off the village of
Urke, where a shuttle boat takes us to shore. The trip continues by
bus through ’Norway’s narrowest valley’, Norangsdalen valley. One of the
most unique sights here is Lyngstølvatnet lake, where you can see the
remains of an old summer pasture farm just below the surface. A rock
fall in 1908 created a natural dam which in turn led to the formation of
Lyngstølvatnet lake. A fascinating sight and an exciting history. We stop
by the historical Hotel Union Øye, which serves local specialities.
Back in Ålesund, the trip continues by the Hurtigruten coastal express
to Bergen, a city with a small-town charm and atmosphere where you
can experience the World Heritage Site Bryggen, among other things.
Plan stops en route!

TRAIN
FACTS
A cycling trail of unique beauty with a wide range of scenic
experiences from ’the Roof of Norway’ and down to the fjord.
The Navvies’ Road starts at Haugastøl and gradually ascends the
27 kilometres to Finse. You can start the trip at Finse if you don’t
want to cycle the whole way. You can also visit Rallarmuseet (the
Navvies’ Museum) at Finse.
En route, you cycle past Fagernut Vokterbolig (lengthman’s cabin)
from 1904, the highest-altitude cabin in Norway. Here, you will find
the Rallar Café and an exhibition about the lives of the lengthmen
in the mountains. On the stretch from Fagernut to Hallingskeid,
you cross the old railway and pass a lengthman’s cabin that was
the largest dwelling in these mountains. Many consider the stretch
from Hallingskeid to Vatnahalsen, with its steep descent and wild
waterfalls, to be the most spectacular part of the route. From
Vatnahalsen, you continue down through the Flåmsdalen valley to
Flåm.
The weather in the mountains is very changeable. It is important to
bring warm clothes. During the week, there is more capacity with
respect to trains, bike hire and accommodation.
