Set up in 2012 by Islington Giving and founding funders Macquarie Group Foundation,
The Businesses for Islington Giving (BIG) Alliance facilitates employee volunteering
and engagement in community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations, education
programmes and employment projects across Islington.
This satellite office is managed by the East
London Business Alliance on behalf of
Islington Giving. It aims to make community
investment easier, more effective and more
rewarding for its business members.

BIG Alliance activities during Islington Giving Week
About Islington Giving
Islington is a borough of stark contrasts –
a place where great wealth sits alongside
often hidden poverty.
To date it has placed more than 640 business
volunteers into over 78 community
organisations, schools, colleges and universities
and placed 58 Islington residents into work.
Islington has some shocking statistics: the
second highest level of child poverty in London
and fourth in England, the lowest life expectancy
for men in London, and the highest level of
depression and mental ill health in London.
Islington Giving was formed in 2010 to address
these issues. To date we have raised over £2.6m
and have supported over 40 local projects in the
borough, working to invest in young people,
tackle poverty and help confront isolation.
The BIG Alliance has several events taking place for its member organisations
during Islington Giving Week. They include:
The BIG Alliance Forum
Schools mentoring celebration event
Bringing together senior representatives from
the BIG Alliance business members and key
public sector stakeholders to discuss
opportunities for the private sector to help
enhance social, economic and/or
infrastructural change in Islington.
A special event to celebrate the achievements
of students from Holloway School and their
mentors from Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ
and Mitsubishi UFJ Securities over the past
year as part of the mentoring programme.
Business skills surgeries and workshops
A Just Turn Up day to encourage employee
volunteers to come and meet with local
unemployed people and help deliver sessions
aimed at developing key employability skills.
In partnership with Voluntary Action Islington,
the BIG Alliance will be delivering business
surgeries and workshops for community
organisations on a range of topics such as
writing a business plan and communications.
Team challenges
Groups from the BIG Alliance’s member
businesses will be embarking on hands-on
activities such as gardening and DIY to help
community organisations deliver practical
projects that will enhance the facilities and
services they provide.
Employability training

Principle funders and founders:
Islington Giving asks people to give what they
can, be it money, time or talents, to make a
difference – no matter how large or small the
contribution, everyone has something to offer
and gain by being involved.
Much has been done to date but we do hope you
too will consider becoming involved in Islington
Giving as, together, we can and must achieve so
much more.
