Missouri Judicial Conference
The Missouri Judicial Conference, established by the Missouri General Assembly in 1943, is made up of the judges of the
Supreme Court of Missouri, the Court of Appeals, circuit judges, associate circuit judges, and retired judges.
The group meets annually, traditionally holding its annual conference in conjunction with that of The Missouri Bar.
The statutory duties of the Missouri Judicial Conference include the study of:
• The organization, rules, methods of procedure, and practice of Missouri’s judicial system;
• Work accomplished within that system;
• Results produced by the system as a whole and its various parts and judicial tribunals; and
• The problems of administration confronting the courts and the judicial system in general.

Mr. Jones, serving as the lead federal prosecutor, speaks of his successful prosecution
of the historic “cold case” involving the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church
in Birmingham, in which two former Ku Klux Klansmen were convicted almost 40 years
after the crimes were committed. In the case, four young African-American girls were
killed during a Sunday morning church service in the most heinous act of the civil
rights movement. As a result of the efforts of Mr. Jones and his team of investigators
and prosecutors, two men – Tommy Blanton and Bobby Frank Cherry – were convicted
of murder in those cases and each sentenced to life in prison.

Since early 2010, the Missouri Department of Corrections’ “Puppies for Parole” programs
and their partnership shelters have trained and found forever homes for more than
2,500 dogs across Missouri. Many have been saved from euthanization. Selected offenders
receive training from a volunteer trainer(s) and train dogs in house rules and socialization
skills. We like to say it is a win-win-win situation – communities win, dogs win and offenders
win! Many of these castaway dogs have special skills. They have been trained to be therapy
dogs, helper dogs, search and rescue dogs, and even a courtroom dog. Learn how our
P4P and Advanced P4P programs work, about our partnership with COMTREA and meet
Natalie, our first courtroom dog trained through P4P.

Same Sex Issues: Navigating the Conflicting Legal Landscape of Marriage and the
Broader Implications for Other Areas of Law – Atlanta B/New York B
1.8 MCLE Hours
Moderator: Hon. Michael A. Wolff, Dean, Saint Louis University School of Law, St. Louis
Panelists: Linda Henry Elrod, Richard S. Righter Distinguished Professor of Law, Washburn
University School of Law, Topeka, KS; James R. Layton, Solicitor General, Office of the
Missouri Attorney General, Jefferson City; Lori W. Jones, Thompson Coburn, LLP,
St. Louis; H. Elvin Knight, Jr., Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne, LLP, Kansas City
It’s been all over the news … and all over our nation’s courts: the issue of same-sex
marriage. The ramifications are enormous for those involved and for society as a whole,
but the road to a resolution is littered with conflicts: state laws legalizing same-sex marriage
versus state laws and constitutions banning it; court rulings pro and con; pending lawsuits;
civil union alternatives; marriages performed and divorces filed; the U.S. Supreme Court’s
decision regarding the Defense of Marriage Act; and federal and state actions on such
related issues as taxes and benefits. Our expert panel will offer a roadmap through the
conflicting and shifting legal landscape surrounding this controversial issue, and offer
lawyers guidance on how to advise clients in a range of areas, including family law, probate,
employee and government rights and benefits, taxes, civil rights and more.

If You Have Nothing to Hide, You Have No Problem … Really? Evolving Expectations
and New Realities When It Comes to Privacy – Atlanta B/New York B
1.8 MCLE Hours Moderator: Ellen Y. Suni, Dean, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law,
Kansas City
Panelists: Thomas Brown, FTI Consulting, Global Risk & Investigation Practice, New
York; Neil Richards, Professor of Law, Washington University School of Law, St. Louis;
Rachel L. Brand, United States Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board,
Washington, D.C.; Daniel C. Nelson, Partner and Co-Chair, Data Security and Privacy
Practice Group, Armstrong Teasdale, LLP, St. Louis
It is 2014, not 1984 … but has Big Brother become a reality? It seems as though Americans
are being scrutinized from all angles, whether via NSA surveillance, social media, big
data analysis, data mining or data breaches. These revelations have spurred a national
discussion regarding privacy, personal disclosure and commercial freedom, not to
mention the clash between civil liberties and national security interests. What is being
collected, who is doing the collecting, and how is it being used? Are existing privacy
protections – courts, laws, regulations, corporate policies, the Constitution – up to the
task posed by this changing reality? Join our distinguished panel for a frank discussion
focused on the evolving expectation of privacy.

Opening Luncheon and Chief Justice’s Address – Crown Center Exhibit Hall
Taking a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of the Annual Meeting’s busy schedule,
lawyers and judges will come together at this luncheon to break bread with one another
and enjoy a program emphasizing the professional ties they share. The centerpiece of
the luncheon program will be remarks from Chief Justice Mary Russell of the Supreme
Court of Missouri, who is expected to provide luncheon attendees with an update on issues
facing the bench and bar when she offers the annual “Chief Justice’s Address.” In addition,
the luncheon will include presentation of the “President’s Award” to individuals who have
made particularly noteworthy contributions to the work of The Missouri Bar during the past
year and a special presentation of the American Judicature Society Herbert Harley Award.
This event will also include the figurative “passing of the gavel” from outgoing Missouri
Bar President P. John Brady of Kansas City to his successor, Reuben Shelton of St. Louis
and the formal swearing-in of Shelton as president of the organization. In addition, the
luncheon will feature recognition as “Senior Counselors” of those distinguished men
and women who will this year mark 50 years in practice or attainment of the age of 75
years. Their examples and leadership and service to their clients offer a shining legacy of
professionalism for all who attend the luncheon.

“Best of Missouri” Reception – Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
Always a highlight of the Annual Meeting, this year’s Best of Missouri Reception will be
enhanced by its setting – the spectacular Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. This
venue, located near the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center and the Crossroads Art
District, is a major component of the ongoing redevelopment of downtown Kansas City.
Architecturally unique, this world-class performing arts facility consists of two symmetrical
half shells of vertical, concentric arches – each housing acoustically independent
performance venues. The structure, which took nearly five years to build, contains 40,000
square feet of glass, offering stunning views of the Kansas City skyline. The Best of
Missouri Reception will take place within the Great Hall, although attendees will have
the opportunity to explore other parts of the center. This includes the two primary
performance venues – the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, which is inspired by the great European
opera houses, and Helzberg Hall, a concert hall that is home to the Kansas City Symphony.

As if the venue didn’t offer enough to stimulate the senses, delicious culinary delights,
open bars and the products of several of the state’s many outstanding wineries and music
by Brookside Strings will enhance the reception experience for all attendees. The relaxed
atmosphere provides an easy setting to strike up conversations with colleagues that
cultivate camaraderie and forge lasting personal and professional ties. Bus transportation
to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will be provided, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

YLS-Sponsored After Hours Reception – Kill Devil Club
The Best of Missouri Reception is over, but you’re not ready to call it a night? No problem!
The Young Lawyers’ Section of The Missouri Bar is once again sponsoring a
post-Best of Missouri event for those interested in continuing the evening’s fun. This
year’s event will take place at the Kill Devil Club, one of Kansas City’s newest hotspots.
Located in the heart of the city’s dynamic Power & Light District, the club offers hand
crafted cocktails, delicious food, and plenty of live music. Make plans to join your friends
for this enticing continuation of the evening’s fun. For those planning to attend this event,
bus transportation will be provided from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts to
the Kill Devil Club upon conclusion of the Best of Missouri Reception. Likewise, buses
will return from the Kill Devil Club to the Sheraton Crown Center, running on the hour
until just before midnight.

Change is inevitable … but it also often can be disconcerting. Nowhere is that more evident
than within the legal profession, where even the slightest shifts often have enormous
consequences. Indeed, numerous studies, task forces and committees at the national
and state levels have focused on the impact of change and the future of the legal profession
– not to mention being addressed in blogs, legal publications, and wherever lawyers gather.
Those concerns would seem to be well-founded, as it would appear that the legal profession
is immersed in challenges – increased competition from inside and outside of the profession,
concerns about diminished professionalism and declining value in the eyes of the public,
increased stresses brought on by altered career opportunities, the enormous debt carried
by many young lawyers, the unremitting impact of technology, and more. Faced with all of
this, where do lawyers go from here? Join the panelists – themselves representing the
multi-generational composition of the profession today – for an interactive discussion of
the forces of change, their impact on lawyers in the trenches, and how change can be
converted into opportunities for improvement.
