NEWSLETTER NO. 6 SPRING 2014
Dear
Friends
A Celebration of J.S Bach with Roger B. Williams and the Union Chapel Singers
Wednesday 26th March 7pm
FREE
During his lifetime Bach was best known as an organist,
organ consultant, and composer of organ works - The Organ Project
and Friends of Union Chapel would like to welcome you all along to
a free evening recital celebrating this canon of work on
Wednesday 26th of March, from 7pm.
Window Works
The major restoration project currently underway at the Chapel is focusing on the windows in
the ancillary rooms of the building.
We've started work restoring the windows in the Sunday School
Hall, Lower Hall, Bar, Committee Room and the offices to their
original glory. Windows that should open will, broken panes
will be replaced and all the glass will be made to match.
Seals will be included so that they have better insulation and
the frames will be repainted.
The works are being part funded by Section 106 money provided
by Notting Hill Housing, who are the owners of the 85 Canonbury
Road site (the former Highbury Corner car park behind the Chapel)
which they are currently redeveloping.
The inside work in the Sunday School Hall and offices has already being completed and work will
begin on the remaining spaces shortly.

Lions & Tigers & Bears! Oh my!
Well just a lion after all but frightening enough...
The year 1940 makes the history books for many a reason but we
may now add the most alarming job interview of all time to
the annals. Union Chapel, in need of a new minister invited one Rev
Ronald Taylor to preach and after a successful service he was invited to coffee with the Deacons.
So far so normal but halfway through this very civilised affair the
air-raid siren sounded and the whole group was forced
to retreat down into "a labyrinth of basements", where Taylor felt
he might actually be in greater danger from the buildings collapsing
above him. Containing himself, he entered the suggested room in
half-light to find himself confronted by a stuffed lion!
Life in the chapel has never been boring, unfortunately though Taylor doesn't record what became of
the lion. He did at least get the job!
Andrew Gardner, Chairman of Islington Archaeology and History Society and Outreach officer here at
Union Chapel is eager to hear from anyone with first hand recollections of Ronald Taylor, Minister
from 1940 - 1980. Email [email protected] if you have any tales that may be of interest
