Mystic Theatre
Theatre Lucerna in cooperation with
the Theatre Na Zabradli and the Teatro
NoD - Roxy, supported by the City
of Prague, Ministry of Culture and
National Cultural Fund presents the 16th
International Festival of Independent
and Amateur Theatres XVI. APOSTROF,
Praha 2014 held from 30th of June –
2nd of July.
The first year of the festival took place
in July 1999 with participation of 13
theatre companies from Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Hungary and Venezuela.
During the past years, the festival
welcomed dozens of theatres from all
over the world with performances of all
of theatrical genres. The festival took
place from the first year in the Theatre
Na Zabradli that became the central
festival stage. Since 2005 a festival
program moved to the Theatre DISK
of the Academy of Arts. In 2011 the
Teatro NoD - Roxy became the second
festival stage. The program was held in
a past on many others Prague stages,
too. In 2005 the festival name was
simplified from „MB(apostrof)99“ to
“APOSTROF”; however, the composition
of its program has not changed.
Participation in the festival attracts
year by year a wider range of foreign
theatres from more and more further
countries. The Apostrof hosted theatres
of four continents - Europe, America,
Africa and Asia (South Korea, Thailand,
Egypt, Venezuela, Argentina, USA,
India etc.).
Theatre Lucerna – main promoter of the APOSTROF
Since its foundation in early 1975 the
company kept collecting its experience
by staging own musical comedies. Since
its arrival to the Malostranská Beseda
- Music Club in 1976 Lucerna co-operated with the professional directors. First
production that came out of this co-operation was “The Ballad for a Bandit” by
Milan Uhde and Miloš Štědroň (January
1977, direction Zdeněk Pospíšil), thanks
to which the Lucerna immediately rose
up among the top Prague amateur
theatres. In its history Lucerna worked
with many more Czech directors on the
top (Peter Scherhaufer, Jan Borna) that
have merited of the high level of this
After the “velvet revolution” year 1989
only “The Ballad” remained on the
repertory. In the second half of 1990s
Akram Staněk was asked for participati-
on as a director, and by time he became a “resident” director and later also
the artistic director. Under his leadership, many very successful productions
were created: “Horror” and “Blue
Face” by A. Goldflam, „Darkness” by
L. Andrejev, etc. Lucerna thus picked
up the threads of its rich history of
international tours. The plays “Horror”
and “Darkness” were presented at the
festival Fiesta in Venezuelan Caracas,
Austria, Argentina, Russia and Germany as well.
Lucerna realized several projects then
for which mainly the young members
of the company were responsible, as
for example a collective show “GO’LASH”, “That Improper”, “The Sold
Stomach”, the project Psycho I and II,
Tot’s Family, In a Full Moon, etc. From
1999 a part of Lucerna members
has been given themselves entirely to
preparation and holding of the festival
APOSTROF. Currently the Lucerna
is only organizer of this festival and
its own theatre production has been

The history of The Theatre Na Zabradli began on 9th December 1958 with
the first show of the play „If a Thousand Clarinets“ by Jiří Suchý and Ivan
Vyskočil, two of four founders of the
theatre. There has been the Apostrof’s home here from the beginning of its
history (1999).
Zabradli is one of the most interesting
and best theatres, which has always
belonged to the peak of Czech theatre
work. The pantomime of Ladislav
Fialka, which was known worldwide,
won a wide acclaim abroad, and at
home was highly reputable by domestic as well as foreign visitors. During
the theatre history there have worked
(and still work) many top actors and
directors. The repertoire is composed

mainly of the original domestic plays
and/or Czech premieres of contemporary foreign playwrights. On the
Theatre´s 40th anniversary in 1998
the former Czech president Vaclav
Havel, who worked at this theatre in
the years 1960 - 1968, dedicated
to Theatre Na Zabradli the following
„...We spent with my wife Olga fully
full eight years of our life. It was, in
fact, the only time when I could fully
pursue my different theatre “crafts”:
I worked there as a lighting technician, stage-hand, dramatic adviser,
author, secretary and even as an actor
... Time spent here formed me not only
as an author, but also as a man. I like
to keep it in my mind.“
Theatre’s dramaturgy is focusing principally on premieres of contemporary
Czech and foreign plays, for example in its projects “Czechoslovakian
Springs” - the reviews of the up-to-date
Czech and Slovak drama titles. In
short, the Zabradli is a theatre that
is still provoking and experimenting
and trying to educate not only young
people but all of its spectators which
are not interested only in entertainment. In September 2013 Mgr. Petr
Štědroň became the new director of
this theatre with artistic leadership
Dora Viceníková and main artistic
director Jan Mikulášek. Our collaboration continues.

The NoD is an institution whose
content and form are identified by
three dramaturgical sections. Their
names are NoD Gallery (exhibition),
Teatro NoD (theatre) and NoD Lab
(media). They work under the NoD
and create its unique look. Each is
led by a man who gives its individual
dimension. Aesthetics of Nod is not
fixe; anyone who participates in the
program affects it. The fundament is
a dialogue, an openness of dramatist,
artist and visitor on this space. This
area is defined as an experimental
space. It is open to both artistic and
social experimentations, an experimental form of theatre or an access to
education, a cognition and breaking
down prejudices. “Experimental”
does not mean content’s limit or the
only one value. The essential thing
is a quality, honesty and the need to
create and collaborate. An important
aspect of this space is its versatility.
Dramaturgies are using any premises
without NoD’s content restrictions.
Gallery spaces can be changed in the
theatre, and vice versa, audiovisual
production as well as film screenings
can happen anywhere. Individual action can support, complement or exist
independently. The connecting element
is a visitor who is able to perceive
all the events closely, is merely a part
or an unbiased witness. Everyone
happens here a part of the naturally
incipient community and the content of
this space.

The River
The Teatro Didático da UNESP has 20 years of tradition in
the field of theatrical creation. The past four years theatre dedicated its affort to the development of a theatrical
language which is a combination of theatrical and visual
arts. Based on this principle the group elected the universe
of Visual Theatre, a discipline of the Animated Forms, as
the central element of its creative process. On stage there
are several elements combined in the same level of poetic
existence mainly the puppet, but also objects, actors, pictures, etc. With the same principle works the performance
The River - theatrical creation inspired by the poem of João
Cabral de Melo Neto. The spectacle presents in a singular
way an aspect of Brazilian reality using iconic images.
Despite being connected to an University, the professionalism of its members led the group’s work beyond the
university gates and academic research. Today, the group
is inserted into the theatrical context, not only of the state of
São Paulo, but in the actual context of the Brazilian theatre,
especially with regard to the universe’s Animation Theatre.
The show O Rio (The River) is not just an illustration of the
poem by João Cabral de Melo Neto. It is an autonomous
creation where the river is incorporated to the perception
of the viewer but who can’t see it on the scene. The river is
only felt intuitively through urgent walking men and animals, plants and dust. Paintings of poems become a metaphor for the rough, dry reality of human life.

The company Compagnia Teatrale Costellazione was founded
in 2005 and moves along the lines of experimental theatre.
In the beginning of preparation of the show the group
elaborates an original text or an adaptation similar to the
chosen thematic content, which is developed in an intensive
workshop during which characters and situations are created.
Their performances show the firm will to give each component
of the scene the full dignity of the language that expresses
it. That means reducing the scenic apparatus and assigning
a corporeal substance to the music and lights, so they have
equal rights with the actor. Opened to every possible variation,
aiming at synthesis. During years the group has participated in
numerous festivals receiving many National Awards from both
the public and critics. For the stylistic choice of the director the
Company has often been chosen to represent Italy at various
international festivals.
About performance
This performance is based on Notre Dame de Paris by Hugo
and Brecht’s Threepenny Opera, but it doesn’t work with
the main character Quasimodo but with the greatness and
misfortune of the various characters lead by Ananke, Destiny.
In the empty scenery there are seven steel stairs that change
constantly and create different places and environments. The
characters use this material in constant motion. The Cathedral
is full of mystery of all the past lifes that have animated it.
What remains is the stone, full of ideals, fantasies, conflicts,
suffering and the needs of human beings. Immersed in another
time, the intersects of the past and present reveal what is
hidden. The Cathedral of stone merges with the cathedral
of men and with help of words and movements it becomes
a living organism. Enjoy the stories from the history that seems
old but is still present in our contemporary world.

About performance
The family Samsas’ quiet life is turned upside down when the son
Gregor wakes up one morning and was transformed into a giant insect.
The family reacts with disgust. What will people think? And who will
care for them now? While Gregor is isolated in his room, the rest of
the family are living on, as if nothing has happened. They think that
Gregor’s existence and presence is disgusting and embarrassing. Can
he not just go away? Franz Kafka’s play is all about human dignity
and human relations. About what the consequences will be, when the
demands of work and society are too great, bigotry, brutality, loneliness,
selfishness and of human fear and loathing for the strangers. Connected
with Damir “Dado” Pudar its innovative physical scene expression, is the
transformation a gripping scenic tale. The only sound effects applied to
the play is a violin and a metronom, both arranged by the actors.

About performance
Five Windows is name of the International Touring Arts
Festival of Visegrad Countries. The leitmotif of the project
is the symbol of ‘window’ that draws subtitle glass boarder
between the inner and outer world. We chose this leitmotif
as the take off for our work, for it represents one of the symbols of our collective unconsciousness. The window marks
out a fragment of the world, hence makes it available for
research. It’s the window through which we see the world,
and the world sees us. According to idiosyncratic architect Hundertwasser, “every man has the right to paint his
window alike him/herself (a reflection of soul); and a Right
for Light, enabling you to cut a window in the wall of your
