EDITOR’S VOICE
Consolidated financial aid schemes!
The cold chain sector in India has witnessed immense growth in the last
decade. According to a recent report, the cold chain sector is growing at
the rate of 25.8 per cent. Significant increase in the growth rate was visible
in 2009 when the technical standards for cold chain were introduced and
linked to the financial incentives available.
Initially subsidies were sanctioned to the owners and promoters and
eventually were deployed for personal use, as put by the industry. The
linking of subsidies to the technical standards and proper audit system
enforced by NHB has led to this speedier growth in the cold chain sector.
Another problem which persisted was that the genuine contender was not
aware of the right window to obtain the financial aid. There was a gamut
of national and state level bodies that were offering subsidies to the cold
chain industry in one form or the other which at one point of time led to
a baffled state of affairs.

This quarterly magazine showcases the
cold chain and allied industries. We at
ICE believe the primary objective of our
industry is to enable freshness in supply
chain and contribute to the country’s growth
by arresting wastage. We welcome all
fresh ideas, write-ups and look forward to
initiatives by the government and think-tanks
for our industry.

The recent initiative of MIDH to consolidate the financial aids given by
various government institutions is welcomed by the industry. The current
guidelines and distribution of financial aid has holistically covered all
functional, structural and operational aspects of cold chain in India. Due
importance has been given to all the components of cold chain and efforts
are taken to make the subsidies reach the right points. In the current issue
we have tried to bring to our readers the specific parts of the guidelines
significant for the cod chain sector. We hope this issue is preserved as a
ready source of information on the new MIDH guidelines.

Revised funding schemes
from MIDH to boost
cold chain infrastructure
Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH)
is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the holistic growth of
the horticulture sector covering fruits, vegetables, root &
tuber crops, mushrooms, spices, flowers, aromatic plants,
coconut, cashew, cocoa and bamboo.
MIDH has come up with new schemes for the Agriculture
Sector as an initiative to boost productivity. In the cover
story for this issue we have covered the MIDH guidelines
related to the cold chain sector. The feature talks about
the fund flow mechanism and the assistance provided
under various heads. The assistance has been covered
under Integrated Post Harvest Management, Cold Chain
Infrastructure, creation of market infrastructure and food
processing. The details are as follows:
Integrated Post Harvest Management
Assistance for setting up of
new cold storage infrastructure
will be available only to multichamber cold storage units
with technologies which are
energy efficient with provision
for thermal insulation, humidity
control, advanced cooling
systems, automation, etc.,
having specifications and
standards approved by the
Ministry.
Under post-harvest management, including that for
Medicinal plants, activities like handling, grading, preconditioning, packaging, transient storage, transportation,
distribution, curing and ripening and where possible
long term storage can be taken up. Existing schemes of
the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) and
National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)
will be leveraged to the extent possible. MIDH would
include projects relating to establishment of pre-cooling
units, ‘on-farm’ pack houses, mobile pre-cooling units,
staging cold rooms, cold storage units with and without
controlled atmosphere capability, integrated cold chain
system, supply of refrigerated vans, refrigerated containers,
primary/mobile processing units, ripening chambers,
evaporative/low energy cool chambers, preservation units,
onion storage units and zero energy cool chambers. These
projects will be entrepreneur driven and provided credit
linked back-ended subsidy. PSUs/Government agencies/
Cooperatives/growers’ association recognized/registered
by the DMCs, having at least 25 members, will also be
entitled to avail assistance for such activities. They may
avail back ended subsidy without credit link, subject to
condition that they are able to meet their share of the
project cost.

Cold Chain Infrastructure
Assistance for setting up of new cold storage infrastructure
will be available only to multi-chamber cold storage units
with technologies which are energy efficient with provision
for thermal insulation, humidity control, advanced cooling
systems, automation, etc., having specifications and
standards approved by the Ministry. While Cold storages
(Long term storage and distribution hubs) upto 5000
MT capacity will be promoted under NHM/HMNEH subschemes, capacity above 5000 MT upto 10000 MT will be
promoted under NHB sub-scheme. In this context, for cold
storages, 3.4 cubic metres (cum.) (120 cubic feet (cft.)) of
chamber volume shall be considered equivalent to one MT
of storage capacity. Similarly, for refrigerated transport, 3
cum (106 cft) of chamber volume shall be equivalent to
one MT of storage capacity and for ripening chambers,
11 cum of chamber volume shall be equivalent to one MT
of storage capacity. Assistance for pre-cooling unit will be
linked to pack-houses and cold rooms (staging). Similarly
assistance for staging cold room will be linked to existing &
new pre-coolers.
Extant specifications standards and protocols on cold
storage and cold-chain components will be adhered
to while approving cold storage projects. Revisions to
technical standards and adherence protocols shall be
updated by National Centre for Cold-chain Development
(NCCD) as necessary when improved technologies and
efficiencies are introduced/understood/approved.

be provided as credit linked back
ended subsidy for setting up whole
sale markets, rural markets/apni
mandis and retail markets. In case
of Terminal markets, assistance
will be provided in accordance
with approved norms, for which
guidelines have been issued
separately, and available on the
NHM website.
Assistance can also be availed for a combination of PHM
infrastructure components by a beneficiary, within the
prescribed norms of individual items. Assistance will
be available to individuals, Group of farmers/growers/
consumers, Partnership/ Proprietary firms, Self Help
Groups (SHGs), Farmers Producer Organization (FPOs),
Companies, Corporations, Cooperatives, Cooperative
Marketing Federations, Local bodies, Agricultural Produce
Market Committees (APMC) & Marketing Boards and State
Governments.
Assistance will also be available for taking up cold chain
components so as to integrate the activities into a single
project, as a new component during XII Plan.
Creation of Market Infrastructure
Main objectives of providing assistance under this component are
• To encourage investments from private and cooperative sectors in the development of marketing
infrastructure for horticulture commodities
• Strengthen existing horticulture markets including wholesale and rural markets
• Focus on promotion of grading, standardization and quality certification of horticulture produce at
farm/market level to enable farmers to realize better price
• Create general awareness among farmers, consumers, entrepreneurs and market functionaries on
market related agricultural practices.
Assistance under the Scheme will be provided as credit linked back ended subsidy for setting up whole
sale markets, rural markets/apni mandis and retail markets. In case of Terminal markets, assistance will
be provided in accordance with approved norms, for which guidelines have been issued separately,
and available on the NHM website. Assistance will also be provided for setting up static / mobile
vending cart/ platform with cool chamber. Assistance will also be extended for setting up functional
infrastructure as credit linked back ended subsidy.
Assistance for setting up markets will only be given to those States/UTs which have amended their State
Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act and have also notified the amended rules there
under to implement the provisions for:
• Setting up of new markets in private and cooperative sector; 32
• Direct marketing (sourcing of horticulture produce directly from growers by wholesalers/ bulk retailers/
processors/ exporters/ end users). (If trade transaction of horticulture perishables takes place outside
the market-yard, no market fee should be levied)
• Doing away with requirement of having premises within the market yard for grant of license.
• Contract farming and.
• Waiver of market fee on perishable horticulture produce.
Assistance will be available to individuals, Group of
farmers/growers/consumers, Partnership/ Proprietary
firms, Self Help Groups (SHGs), Farmers Producer
Organization (FPOs), Companies, Corporations,
Cooperatives, Cooperative Marketing Federations, Local
bodies, Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMC)
& Marketing Boards and State Governments. Projects
submitted by only those APMCs will be considered for
assistance, which do not levy market cess on horticulture
produce.
Cost of land involved in infrastructure projects will be
restricted to 15 percent of project cost in rural areas
and 25 percent in urban areas. The entrepreneur will
not alienate land during period of loan for any purpose
other than the purpose for which project is sanctioned. A
separate undertaking from entrepreneur is required to be
included in this regard in the DPR. Size of project will be
determined on basis of economic viability and commercial
considerations;
Quality control / analysis lab has been included under the
Mission wherein assistance will be provided for setting up
quality control labs having necessary infrastructure and
manpower facility to check quality of horticultural produce
vis-à-vis international standards.
Processing & Value Addition
Processing of horticultural produce and value addition is
an important activity. While primary / minimal processing
units will be promoted under NHM, large scale processing
units will be promoted by Ministry of Food Processing
Industries (MFPI), out of their ongoing Schemes. However,
food processing units in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &
Kashmir and Uttarakhand will be promoted under HMNEH
sub scheme.

Flow chart for release of funds under MIDH is given below:
Finally since we have an idea about the various schemes
available for funding the cold chain infrastructure it is
equally important to know the fund flow mechanism.
For this at the end we provide Flow of funds and the
utilization by the Implementing Agencies / SHMs / SBDA/
NLAs / PRIs etc from Government of India and utilization
of funds shall be governed by extant financial norms.
Funds will be released to the State Governments. State
Government will release funds to the SHMs / State
Level Implementing Agencies, who in turn would make
funds available to DMC/ District Implementing Agency.
As far as possible, efforts to make on-line payment to
all Implementing Agencies would be ensured, which in
turn will make arrangements for making payment to
beneficiaries through electronic transfer, preferably to their
respective bank accounts.
Implementing agencies would be required to undertake
activities within the funds released by the GOI and
corresponding state share in respect of NHM. No claims of
pending liabilities relating to expenditure over and above
released funds will be entertained by DAC.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
Operation & Maintenance
in Refrigeration system
The term preventive maintenance commonly refers to the practice of
regularly servicing equipment on a pre-determined schedule so that it does
not develop catastrophic failures and performs better over its useful lifecycle.
Although it is well known that equipment routinely serviced on a
pre-determined schedule outlasts equipment that is not, many companies
still indulge in the practice of neglecting equipment and/or only responding
reactively to equipment failures.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE FOR A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
The refrigeration system in a cold storage typically consists of the following
four major units:
Compressor
Condenser
Evaporator
Preventive maintenance is essential for all the four components

COMPRESSOR
The compressor is considered as the heart of the Refrigeration System (circulates refrigerant in the
system – like heart circulates blood in the human system) and does not tolerate liquid in the system
& hence utmost care to be taken to prevent liquid entry into compressor. It needs to be adequately
lubricated to avoid wear & excessive heat build up. Since compressor is the heart of the system, attempt
should be made to protect it at all costs.

CONDENSERS
There are three types of condensers available which are Air-cooled, Water-cooled and a combination of
both. As the laws explain lower the condensing pressure better the system performance. The performance
is also dependent on the quality of water, dirty or scaled condenser coil/ tubes and location of air-cooled
condenser - adequate space for hot air to disperse, without recirculation
Troubleshooting for Air Cooled Condensers
PROBLEM: High head pressure

EVAPORATORS
Evaporators in use are basically of two types:
• Direct expansion type
• Flooded type
They are normally used in Ammonia installations
and oil recovery is not a major issue. Flooded
evaporators are more efficient as the entire coil
surface is utilized for evaporation, by keeping the
refrigerant wet both at start & end
Evaporator Capacity
Proper selection of capacity important as
inadequate capacity will cause an undesirable rise
in the space or product temperature. The cause of
less capacity could be
• Dirty filters- air coils
• Fouled tubes
• Frost build up- low temperature units
• Water pump faulty
• Water strainer choked
AIR COOLING UNITS
The general problems associated with Air cooling units and their related
symptoms and causes are discussed under:

HAND EXPANSION VALVE
It is hand operated needle valve. The degree
of valve opening is manually adjusted on
site. Normally the flow rate of refrigerant
through hand expansion valve will remain
constant at all times. This means that the hand
expansion valve is able to take care of all flow
requirements at full load. The excess liquid
feed will raise the level inside the serge drum
/ accumulator. This increase in level is sensed
by float control and when it reaches high level,
the solenoid valve will be cut act.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
During designing and implementing preventive maintenance schedule one should
take into consideration the plant capacity, available time period to carryout required
maintenance and the standby equipment.

Safely using pesticides depends on
using the appropriate pesticide and
using it correctly. The label on the
pesticide container provides instructions
for use of the pesticide. It also includes
warnings that are intended to let the
user know how to prevent harmful
exposures, such as by wearing
protective clothing, keeping children
and pets out of the treated area for
certain periods, and so on. It is very
important to Read the label first before
using a pesticide.
Ever since pesticides have been
available, society has been concerned
about the risks associated with their
use. While it is true that there are
often environmental and health risks
with using pesticides, there are also
risks involved in many activities in
our daily lives, such as driving an
automobile or riding a bicycle on a
busy street. On the other hand, there
may be grave risks associated with
letting certain pests go uncontrolled.
Pests in cold storage
No insect can multiply in cold
storage. Controlled atmosphere
involving fumigation and then
storing in cold atmosphere is
used to eliminate insects for some
commodities. Fumigation prior and
after to storing food products and
agricultural produce is needed for
many commodities like:

are heavily dependent on the use
of the fumigant methyl bromide
(MeBr), which is an ozone-depleting
substance and whose use is under
continual pressure.
Clearly identification of opportunities
for research into alternatives is
required. The advantages of MeBr are
its low cost, ease of application, and
broad spectrum.
Future solutions are unlikely to
have all three of these properties.
Rather, they are likely to be specific
to individual crops, cultivars, pests,
markets and even growing regions.
This therefore requires a much higher
level of knowledge on the treatment,
pests, product and how and where
these fit into the supply chain for
each market.
New solutions are also being
increasingly targeted to be “soft”
solutions which leave no residues,
and in some cases even reduce
agrichemical residues that were
applied preharvest.

The exterior areas surrounding the

maintained in a clean and orderly
manner to prevent the accumulation
of debris, discarded packaging,
equipment or other materials which
may provide harborage for rodents. It
is recommended that the surrounding
area be surfaced and adequately
sloped to prevent accumulated pools
of water.
Labels contain important information.
The cold storage warehouse, and
the immediate vicinity surrounding
the warehouse, must be monitored
to detect the presence of pests,
including insects and rodents.
Monitoring procedures and persons
responsible to monitor for pest
activity must be documented (such as
visual checks of traps, bait stations on
a weekly basis).

Worker Protection
There are a number of steps that

warehouse workers and pesticide
handlers. The owners and employers
must provide protections to workers
and handlers from potential pesticide
exposure, train them about pesticide
safety, and provide mitigations in
case exposures may occur. Worker
protection is intended to inform
workers and handlers about pesticide
safety, provide protections from
potential exposure to pesticides, and
mitigate exposures that do occur.
Under the plan the following points
need to be kept in mind:

workers and handlers,

for pesticide handlers and earlyentry workers,

the establishment, emergency

are doing permitted tasks in
pesticide-treated areas during an
REI, including special instructions

inadvertent exposures,

CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE
Developments in Controlled
Atmosphere Cold Storage in India
The concept of controlled atmosphere storages (CAS) was
started with Franklin Kidd and Cyril West as mentioned in
a Special Report of the Food Investigation Board, England
in 1928. Then commercial storage application spread
to Canter-bury in Kent (1929), Hudson Valley (1940).
Today CAS is used extensively in many countries with
leading players in United States, Canada, England, France,
Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Japan, Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa and Spreading to developing
countries also.
EARLY EFFORTS IN INDIA
The then Department of Horticulture of Jammu &
Kashmir (now Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural
Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) under a World Bank
aided project established an experimental CAS of small
magnitude in September 1985. The CA unit, located at its
Shalimar Campus, consisted of eight gas tight insulated
cold rooms each with a space of 19 m3 for 2 tones apple
per chamber. It also had two processing chambers each
with two compressors to enable rapid cooling whereas

CA chambers had a single compressor each. The carbon
dioxide scrubber was lime scrubbing. The pre-cooling,
refrigeration and CA facilities were put to test in 198586 and 1986-87. After pre-cooling in two chambers, the
fruit (Red Delicious) was stored for 220 and 249 days in
1985-86; and for 199 and 231 days in 1986-87 in two
CA chambers. After storage, the fruit was rated to be in
market-acceptable condition as established by organoleptic evaluation, response in terms of returns earned in
Delhi wholesale market and laboratory analysis of quality
parameters. A gaseous regime of 2-2.5 percent oxygen
and 1-1.5 percent carbon dioxide was attempted through
product generation. However, only 1.3 and 5.4 percent
oxygen and 1.2 and 1.4 percent carbon dioxide was
achieved in the two years of evaluation even after periodic
nitrogen flushing, possibly due to undetected leakages
which remained unsealed.
On various aspects of cultivars and fruits as well as
handling practices, the above store of the university has
been renovated for applied research and development
under Ultra Low Oxygen (ULO) conditions for temperate
fruits.
CAS CAPACITY IN INDIA
Promoters in different states initiated steps in the past ten years that have resulted in the creation
of CAS capacity of 92,693 t. Normally, rental model is adopted with 80 percent produce & captive
storage is only 20 percent. Rent fixation is undertaken by cold storage associations Promoters

STORAGE PRACTICES IN INDIA
Normally, total capacity of a CAS varies between 3,000 to
7,000 t. Prompters are coming up with a chamber size of
100 to 250 t using plastic/wooden bins/ mild steel pallets
stacking with forklift operations.
Most owners are using mild steel pallets because farmers
or store owner bring the produce in plastic crates as it
is not feasible take plastic bins to field due to the hilly
terrain of the growing areas. In some cases the produce
is brought in crates and after sorting grading, they are
transferred to plastic bins for CAS. Actually, it is preferred
to bring the produce in crates and these crates are stacked
in mild steel pallets and stacked one on the other with
five high. The advantage of the system is that one can
keep different produce like apple/orange/kinnow etc in
CA chambers without affecting the product during long
storage. During the storage few crates are kept near the
windows and their parameters like pressure/TSS etc are
checked periodically. During this checking weight loss is
also monitored. At present, O2 level is maintained between
1.2 to 1.5 percent and CO2 is kept below 1.3 percent for
Ultra Low Oxygen (ULO). In due course Dynamic CA will
also be introduced.
Most of the CAS are located in the growing area for
which Government offers better subsidy as compared
the CAS near the wholesale markets. In case the CAS are
located near wholesale markets the products are brought
in refrigerated van so that product should not lose its
firmness.
EQUIPMENT USED FOR CA
i.CO2 Centralized Absorbers
The apparatus consists of two tanks filled with active
carbons which give continuous adsorption on the room.
Automatic system for the analysis of the gases CO2 and
O2 is computerized control system of CO2 & O2. This
equipment includes the analysing system divided in two
different parts: the first (analysers and electronic parts) and
the supervision (PC and accessories) in the control room.
ii.Siphon security values
These valves make it possible to limit the small positive or
negative variations in pressure (10-20 mm of a column of
water), which can be created during the storage period.
iii.Manometers
These manometers make it possible to measure the
pressure differential, expressed in millimetres of a column
of water, between the cell and the external environment.
iv.Compensation lungs
Special lightweight polyester material, gas-tight, with a
volume equal to five percent of the cell volume, to limit

v.Hollow fiber membranes N2 generator
The membranes are contained in an appropriately
dimensioned cylinder in which the separation of oxygen
from the nitrogen occurs by means of filtering, under
a pressure of 13 bars, generated by an appropriately
powered air compressor.
vi. Resins and fibreglass
The materials necessary for the gas tightness of the joints
of the panels, corners between ceilings/wall and the
corners between floors/wall of the cold stores. In order
to guarantee a perfect sealing. The fibreglass is applied
in combination with the resin to guarantee perfect gas
tightness for very long time.
GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES
Realizing the need for bench-mark reference technical
specifications to be followed while approving and
planning/designing a cold store or integrated cold chain,
Government of India, Department of Agriculture &
Cooperation notified technical standards on various cold
chain applications. One of such interventions, system
standard is on control atmosphere cold store (Technical
Standards Number NHB-CS-Type 03-2010) with the
Government notification that all the project proposals
received under various schemes of the department for
setting up cold chain projects should in variably comply to
the said technical standards with effect from 01.04.2010.
The Technical Standards have general information on
the type of produce that can be stored in particular
type / module, their critical storage conditions, (as much
compatible with the world standards as possible by
relying on ISO Standards - ISO 6949:1988 (E) and Word
Food Logistic Organisation (WFLO) database in absence
of research data for Indian conditions) in terms of
temperature, humidity range, CO2 level, loading rate, pull
down time, air circulation and ventilation requirement etc.
In order to facilitate improved design, there is a detailed
basic data sheet available in the Section 2 of the Standards
wherein plotting different specification data into a system
shall lead to better coefficient of performance from energy
efficiency point of view. Section 3 deals with the protocol
for implementation of Technical Standards, probably
through letter of intent (LoI), and system analysis of civil
structure, thermal insulation and refrigeration. These
standards are minimum wherein manufacturers will also
follow “Good Manufacturing Practices” set by the industry
under various codes and standards.
In order to encourage investments in cold chain
infrastructure in public-private partnership mode, Federal
Government has various promotional schemes providing
subsidy to the extent of 40 percent of project cost in plain
areas and 50 or 55 percent in hilly and schedule areas
on the eligible components. Further clarity has also been
induced by way of different cost norms, for instance,
Rs 32,000 per metric ton for CAS space created and Rs
38,000 per metric ton in respect of integrated pack-house
with grading-packing lines serving such CAS.
The technical standard for CAS and cost norms formulated
by National Horticulture Board, have been released
considering the growth potential in the field of CAS in the
country. If acts as a guide for the CA process as well as
the project design, which is so important, for the project

It also includes the basic data sheet where the project
promoters have to furnish their project parameters which
should conform to the technical standard. This is perhaps
the first standard of its kind produced by a developing
country and is expected to help the growth of CAS sector
significantly. 
PRESENT TRENDS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
Under Indian experience, apple have been the prime commodity stored in the CAS, Red Delicious or Royal
Delicious cultivars owing to the fact that apple cultivation is not very old in India and consumer prefer sweet and
dark coloured fruits. Other cultivars and types of other fruits are being tried in various parts of the county as
consumer preference for CA stored produce is growing tremendously.
Due to unduly heavy pressure on transport facilities for two to three months at the peak harvest season (July–
August) extending to October CAS has good scope for local storage. In apple alone, present production is
2,890,000 t (about 3 million tonnes) and even if 50 percent of the produce is considered appropriate for CAS,
the present capacity take care of only 6.41 percent, hence scope for growth is enormous. Other commodities are
to follow. On the quality front, CA stored apples are fetching more price and also liked by the consumer for the
freshness, firmness, preservation of colour, shining and crunchiness. At the same time growers are also organizing
for better quality supplies to the CAS and in-turn getting better prices. However, the use of 1-MCP and other
ethylene inhibitors alone or combined with CA/MA is not in practice.
New areas for research are different cultivars of apple and fruits types such as pear, cherry, plum etc. Present
problems are of adequate quantity of uniform quality. In respect of manpower, adequate trained expert engineers
are available for scientific planning and designing CAS construction projects as are also trained operators under
National Horticulture Board initiative.

To maintain healthy indoor air quality (IAQ) and meet building
codes, buildings must have fresh, outdoor air, also called
ventilation air. This requirement can be expensive since the
air must be heated or cooled and then exhausted to make

There are many types of energy recovery systems but the most
commonly used are rotating wheels, plates, heat pipes and
runaround loops. Energy recovery wheels can be used in

ROTATING WHEELS REUSE CONDITIONED AIR
Rotating wheel technology is sometimes referred to as rotary
heat exchange. Rotating wheels are typically constructed
of aluminum, copper, stainless steel or monel and include
a dedicated electric motor and drive belt(s). The wheel can
be purchased as a stand alone cassette, with fans, or as an
assembly complete with a filtration system and other needed
components.

wheels and enthalpy wheels, use the application of a

or silica gel for humidity transfer. A portion of the moisture
in the air stream with a higher humidity ratio will transfer
to an area of lower humidity.
Wheels are among the most effective of energy recovery
systems, operating at 50 to 85 percent efficiency,
depending on application type. However, they require a
good filtration system to optimize energy transfer.
To determine the best system for a facility, the ideal
amount of humidity to be recovered should be included
in the air properties calculation. This wheel type can be a
good choice for schools, hospitals and other environments
where maintaining comfortable humidity is important.
Caution: With rotating wheel systems, there is typically
some leakage between the intake and exhaust air streams.
In most HVAC applications, the mix of ventilation air can
be 5 to 30 percent of the air supplied to the space. That
means that 70 to 95 percent of the air supplied to the
space is recycled. If the exhaust air is toxic or contains
odors from a bathroom exhaust system and a small
amount of carryover is not acceptable, then a wheel may
not be the right energy recovery system for the facility.
Generally, the size and depth of the wheel, along with
its speed, will determine the rate of recovery. Additional
controls could include wheel speed controls and/or face
and bypass dampers. There are two types of rotating
wheels, sensible heat wheels and total energy wheels.
Sensible wheels, also called heat wheels, transfer
sensible heat, or heat which can be felt and measured on a

section into the wheel assembly. A purge uses a small
amount of ventilation air to drive the exhaust air trapped
in the wheel from the ventilation side of the wheel and
back to the exhaust side of the wheel. The purge system

The low cost of plate technology has made it an increasingly popular choice for energy recovery systems. Plates are most
widely used for small to medium-sized applications. Since they typically need to be large to accommodate higher air flow
rates, they are generally space-prohibitive for larger applications. Their efficiency ranges from 50 to 80 percent and air
streams can be arranged in parallel, cross-flow or counterflow patterns.
How it works

The two airstreams are conducted past each other along thin parallel

90% of the heat in the exhaust air is transferred to the ingoing air,
without, however, any smells or humidity being exchanged.
HEAT EXCHANGER
Now having understood why air exchange is necessary for
fruits & vegetables, stored in a cold storage, we must do
the same in a manner where least energy is used.
The temperature inside in a cold storage is very low (
depending on the fruit and vegetable ) and the ambient
temperature in India is very high for the most of the year,
whether it is day or night. The cold storage temperature
for carrot is 0°C . The carrot in India is stored in the
month of march and we usually taken out from August to
October. The outside temperature would normally be 20
°C to 40 °C. depending on the time of the day or night.
Fruits and vegetables respire at a much higher rate when
they are kept at ambient temperature. As we pull down
temperature in cold stores, and come to the required
temperature of the product for storage, the respiration
comes down.
For most food items CO2 levels are maintained at 4000
PPM and ethylene (C2H4) Levels are kept below1 PPM. For
example if Ethylene (C2H4) is more than 0.5 PPM, Carrots
stored in a cold storage will turn bitter after two weeks of
storage. By inducing in fresh air in a cold storage we keep
the CO2 level in control and also keep the ethylene (C2H4)

Thus when we induce fresh air the 0°C air is going out of
the cold store and air of 20 °C to 40 °C. is coming into the
cold store. When we calculate the amount of CFM coming
in at the high temperature, then the refrigeration load is

in Rupee terms.
So what do we do? We have to exchange the Air from
inside of the cold store for the reasoned given previously.
But if we just exchange the air then precious energy would
be wasted.

Many factors would effect this. For example how
long does the door open in a day, what is the CFM
of the heat exchanger, whether the heat exchanger is
working when it is not clogged at all or it is clogged ,
if clogged then to what extent
COOLING COIL SIDE DUCT
Filter
The filter on both sides of the heat exchanger would
have to be cleaned periodically. The interval of
cleaning would depend on its quality of the air inside
of the cold store and outside. If the particulate matter
of air is high, then the cleaning interval would have to
be short, visa versa if the particulate matter of the air is
low, then the cleaning interval would be longer.
One problem that has been noticed in heat exchanger
system is that the air going inside is naturally slightly at a
higher temperature than the air inside. So where the air
goes in, around that area the products degenerate as they
are being hit with a temperature which is higher than the
appropriate temperature.
The Operator of the cold storage would have to be very
vigilant to see that filters are clean all the time.
Some advanced heat exchangers have a pressure sensor.
So when the filters get clogged beyond the allowed limit,
the drop in the pressure sensor gives off a alarm, to inform
the operator that the time to clean the filter has arrived
So to overcome this cold store owners now get a duct
installed, which take the outside coming in through heat
exchanger behind the cooling coil. What happens with
this is that the air is mixed with the air going on the back
of the coil and when it comes out of the coil it is at the
required temperature for that particular fruit or vegetable.
CO2 DATA LOGGER
Automation has come about in the heat exchange in the
last few years. The CO2 and C2H4 levels are monitored in
the cold store are non data logged and are web based also
now days.

DUCT ARRANGEMENT
So when the levels go beyond the limit the dampers
after automatically and get the fast are in and when the
current levels of CO2 or C2H4 are achieved, the system
closes down. Now days we get matured dampers that
are insulated with puff. These again save every as this is
no heat loss and an added advantage is that this is no
condensation.
One more problem with the duct is that if the temperature
in the side room is lower than the air coming inside duct.
Thus the condensation takes place and dropping would
start and the fruit & vegetable below it would start to rot.
Thus on one side we have saved energy, by using the heat
exchanger, on the other side we have spoiled the fruits or
vegetables
To overcome the problem the duct going behind the
cooling coil with the air that has come from outside
through the heat exchanger have to be insulated with sent
a K value that condensation does not take place and the
product below the duct is not spoiled.
Further automation step is that in case the damped do not
close, when they should be an alarm gets off telling the
operator that the damp has not closed, when it should
be. This again helps in conserving energy in the cold store.
Vice versa when they do not open then also a alarm goes
off.

WATER DRAINAGE ARRANGEMENT
Recommended conditions for long-term storage of
potatoes
Storage temperatures
• Seed potatoes:
2-4oC
• Potatoes for fresh consumption:
4-5oC
• Potatoes for chipping:
7-10oC
• Potatoes for french frying:
5-8oC
• Potatoes for granulation (mashed): 5-7oC
*Ware potatoes must be treated with sprout inhibitor at
storage temperature above 4oC.
• RH of storage atmosphere should be 95% or more.
Most heat exchanger those day have a drainage system, so
if any condensation takes place inside the unit, the water is
taken out of the cold storage.
OUTSIDE DUCT ARRANGEMENT
One very important part to be noted is that the two parts
that take the air in and out of the heat exchanger should
be far apart otherwise a short circuit would occur and the
same air carry out would go in thus defeating the prepare
of air exchanger.
• CO2 conc. should not exceed 1% & O2 level should
be 20-21%.
Modifications required in a cold store for storing
potatoes at 10-12oC
• The existing chamber size is generally too big for
CIPC treatment therefore, partitioning is required.
• Ducts may have to be installed to facilitate flushing
out of accumulated carbon dioxide.
• Humidifiers are needed to maintain the RH above
85%.
• CO2 meters can be installed at a cost of Rs. 0.75
lac to 1.0 lacs, but in most of the cold storages
traditional methods are being used.
• Any chamber with proper CO2, humidity and
temperature control can be used.
The CFM of the heat exchanger would have to be
calculated according to need, after calculation CO2 and
C2H4 production rates of the fruit & Vegetable. It is not
that complicated. A simple look at the respiration chart
and ethylene production chart would tell what to do.
Another point of importance is that the fresh air
induced through the heat exchanger would increase the
refrigeration load of the cold room, as been through
heat recovery been made through the heat exchanger,
it is not 100% recovery. Thus while calculating the heat
load of the cold store, the factor will have to be taken
into consideration. The refrigeration plant thus would be
of a high capacity to take the heat load of the fresh air
produced.

The pull down time to the required temperature would
also have to be taken into consideration. If we take a
long time in the cold store to pull down to the required
temperature, then the size of the heat exchanger would
have to be slightly higher in terms of CFM. Visa Versa of
pull down is very fast as we are pre cooling our product,
then CFM of a lower capacity can be installed.
Energy Conservation is unquestionably of great importance
to all of us, since we rely on energy for everything we do
every single day. Reducing the amount of energy that we
use is a good way to save money, and there are also other
benefits to decreasing energy consumption. As natural
resources used to produce energy become scarce, the cost
of energy will most likely increase. Energy supplies are
limited and, to maintain a good quality of life, we must
find ways to use energy wisely. 

The significance of this trade exhibition
for the cold chain industry was
underlined by the statement of the

Lennox expands R&D presence in Chennai

Voltas Ltd has joined hands with Singapore-based Dow Chemical Pacific Pte Ltd,
a member of Dow Group, to form a joint venture in India, as per a stock market
disclosure. This will be a 50:50 joint venture and will be named as Voltas Water
Solutions Pvt Ltd.
Coke enters dairy segment in India
Beverage giant Coca-Cola India is set to introduce a low-calorie variation of Coca-Cola called
Coke Zero, a relaunch of its energy drink Burn and a pan-India launch of its dairy-based drink
Maaza Milky Delite. The beverage made from milk and mango pulp will be rolled across the
country in 200-ml tetra packs that will be priced between Rs 15 and Rs 18.
Mother Dairy identifies 800 vegetable outlets in Delhi & NCR for
selling the product
Mother Dairy has introduced the concept in Delhi and the national capital region, and
is planning to expand its footprint in Mumbai and Kolkata in the next financial year to
make the fresh paneer available with the local vegetable vendors. 700-800 vegetable
outlets have been identified in the Delhi & NCR area and plan to have 4,000 outlets in
the region within the next 3-4 months. The idea is to make fresh and pure paneer available beyond the regular Mother
Dairy booths.
Danfoss coming up with manufacturing and R&D hub in India
Danfoss Industries is setting up a greenfield manufacturing and R&D hub near Chennai
spread over 50 acres and would be fully ready by the end of this year. It would employ
around 1200 people and the focus would be on Research and Development (R&D)
capabilities. The unit would be complete with three labs and high-end equipments for
testing.
Huge cold storage facility now in Mumbai airport
The country’s largest cold storage facility for imported goods has been set up at the
Mumbai airport. The new facility, set up in a modular building constructed over an area
of 1,400 square meters, can handle all kinds of temperature-sensitive products.
MoFPI released Rs 22.25 crore
With the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) taking the initiative to
implement the National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP), which envisages giving the
sector a fillip by taking it to the state level under the 12th Five-year Plan, the thrust has
been on ensuring that the states take up relevant projects and avail the funds allocated to them for the purpose. So
far, the total allocation for the 12th Five-Year Plan for MoFPI has been Rs 5,990 crore.
Indian govt mulls Bangalore airport cold storage facility
Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has
embarked on setting up cold storage facilities across international airports in the
country. While it has already completed the establishment of such cold storages in
Mumbai, Hyderabad and Lucknow, and Kochi, it now plans to set up a cold storage at
Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.
Fire in Bellary cold storage building
A major fire broke out in a cold storage building on the Bellary-Bangalore Road in the
Bellary industrial area at around 2am on 14th January 2014 and destroyed property and
agricultural produce worth around Rs 25 crore.
IndoSpace Logistics raises $330 mn fund to build warehouses
IndoSpace Logistics Parks Ltd, which develops industrial real estate and warehouses
closed its second fund called IndoSpace Logistics Parks II (ILP II) at $330 million,
exceeding its target size of $300 million. IndoSpace is a venture of the Everstone Group

TESCO enters FDI in multi brand retail
The Foreign Investment Promotion Board approved UK-based Tesco Plc’s proposal to
enter the Indian multi-brand retail segment in joint venture with Tata Group company
with an initial investment of $110 million (about Rs 680 crore). After the approval, Tesco
will pick up a 50 per cent stake in Trent Hypermarket Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary
of Trent Ltd, a Tata Group company. Tesco is the first global retailer to apply for multibrand retailing after the government allowed 51 per cent FDI co.

Signed into law in January 2011, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act was designed to create greater

understand major FSMA requirements and rules. The guide was recently updated to include new

GCCA Joins Food Industry Partners to Oppose FDA Facility Fees
The Global Cold Chain Alliance recently joined forces with over 50 food and agriculture
organizations in opposition to the Food and Drug Administration’s request to collect
registration fees from food facilities. The administration’s proposed FY 2015 budget for FDA
again includes a proposal to impose a food facility registration and inspection fee to fund
agency activities related to FSMA. The agency projects it would collect $60 million in FY 2015 from food and feed

DOE Publishes Final Rule on Commercial Refrigeration Equipment
On March 28th, the Department of Energy published a final rule regarding energy conservation
standards for commercial refrigeration equipment. According to DOE, these standards are intended
to help cut carbon pollution by about 142 million metric tons – equivalent to the annual electricity
use of 14.3 million U.S. homes – and save businesses up to $11.7 billion on their energy bills.
The efficiency standards established update the DOE’s 2009 standards and will make the average
commercial refrigeration unit about 30 percent more efficient, compared to the current standards.

Vinita Bali
– the modest woman behind the strong brand Britannia
When asked about the work life balance she says
that she loves her work and she finds the time to do
many other things that she wants to do. “I spend time
with people, read, go to the movies, am interested in
classical music and dance (I learnt kathak and dabbled
with the sitar for a while), love to travel and used to
play tennis, squash and racket ball (no longer because
I have a back injury). I don’t even think of work-life
balance in the conventional sense.”
Lively, meticulous, full of life, dressed simply, Vinita Bali
was the first woman to head a major consumer goods
company in India. Bali belongs to a typical educated
middle-class family with a well-read mother whose family
had moved to India after Partition. Her father was the
director at Air Headquarters at the Ministry of Defence and
a very cerebral guy. She credits her mother for her lifelong
interest in music, theatre and dance.
She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics
from LSR at the University of Delhi and her MBA at
the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies at
Bombay University. She pursued postgraduate studies in
Business and Economics at Michigan State University on a
scholarship from The Rotary Foundation, and was selected
to work as a Graduate Intern at the United Nations
headquarters in New York.
Her first job was at Voltas where she worked on the
launch of the soft drink brand Rasna. She worked for
the Indian division of Cadbury for 14 years, expanding
the company’s markets in India and Africa. In 1994 Coca
Cola hired her as its Marketing Director and she was later
appointed Vice President of Marketing for Latin America.
During her nine years at Coke, Bali also worked as Vice
President of Corporate Strategy. She left Coke in 2003 to
work at the Zyman Group. She was Managing Principal
and Head of the Business Strategy at the group’s Atlanta
location. She left in 2005 to take up the position of CEO
at Indian food company Britannia Industries where she was
eventually appointed Managing Director in 2006. Under
her direction, Britannia’s revenue tripled to $841 million.
Bali was awarded the “Business Woman of the Year”
Award at the 2009 Economic Times Awards. In 2009

she founded the Britannia Nutrition Foundation which
combats child malnutrition through the distribution of
fortified biscuits to Indian schoolchildren which she is now
spearheading post her stint as M.D., Britannia. She won a
Corporate Social Responsibility Award for her work with
the foundation. In 2011 Forbes named her on its list of
“Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen”.
The lady when asked about the tangential growth in her
career she replies modestly that “The corporate world
happened to me. It was not something I had planned.
In fact, as I reflect on where and how I have spent my
time in the corporate world, the over-arching theme is
one of going with the flow and pursuing a path that was
interesting and different, rather than conventional.” When
asked about the work life balance she says that she loves
her work and she finds the time to do many other things
that she wants to do. “I spend time with people, read, go

A believer in the concept of shorter, more frequent
breaks, she efficiently manages her work and gets ample
amount of time for herself. She was a good hockey
player (centre forward) and played other games such as
badminton, basketball and, till very recently, tennis. At
the end she explains that Art is a great driving force or
better management and that is what has driven her to the
position she holds in the corporate world. 

ICE: What production facilities do you have – how
many plants, where are they – and are there
any plans to expand production capacity?
Officine Mario Dorin has three facilities in Italy
and one in China (Shanghai) together with three
commercial offices around the world: Moscow,
Delhi and Shanghai.
ICE: What is your R&D department working on at
the moment? Are there any new products in
the pipeline for the next year or so?
Designing and pre-production take place only in
Italy. It is here that Dorin has its deeply trained
engineers dedicated to improve the actual
products in terms of efficiency and performances
as well as preview the market requirements.
Actually yes. Dorin’s Technical Department is
studying few new products in order to enlarge
the offer of reciprocating products to its partners,
project that for obvious reasons I cannot explain
further deeply. Just let say that a couple of them
are quite innovative. Dorin is well known for its
advanced innovation: just remember the CO2
transcritical application compressors, developed in
the late 90’s when the majority of the competitors
do not even think that would have been a viable
possibility for the market.
Dorin’s actual production capacity can reach levels
of more than 50.000 pcs a year, but there are
plans to enlarge such ability in order to replay the
increasing demand of customers.
Today Dorin is actually the leader and reference
supplier for CO2 transcritical application with more
than 25.000 transcritical compressors working in
the field and more than 20milions working hours.
The main production occurs in Italy, where we
also have a machining facility and a condensing
unit assembler facility. In Shanghai there is a newly
open facility for production of specific articles for
local market.
ICE: Do you regularly introduce new products or
update existing lines?
Dorin is regularly dedicating a comprehensive
budget annually to R&D in order to implement
the actual production offers in terms of
efficiency, weight, performances and cost. Dorin
is undertaking few innovative projects at the

moment in the field of railways and transport
applications, marine applications and natural
refrigerant applications.

ICE: What industry sectors do you mainly serve?
Who are some of your biggest clients?
Dorin is historically working in the field of
commercial as well as industrial refrigeration, in
railway transport, in marine application (naval and
fishing facilities) and pharmaceutical among else.
Do remember the well known two stage
compressor of Dorin able to reach -70°C, ideal
component for pharmaceutical applications.
Dorin has launched this year the two stage CO2
transcritical compressor, to offer the opportunity to
who may be interested, to apply natural refrigerant
with GWD equal to 0.
Dorin is very much dedicated to support Natural
Refrigeration aiming at lowering the carbon
footprint of its partners.
Dorin’s most well known partners are EPTA,
Angelantoni Industries, Faiveley, Arneg, Carpigiani
and many other well know manufacturers.
ICE: Where are your principal markets – eg
domestic, in central Europe, in all of Europe
or worldwide? Are you moving into new
geographical markets?
Dorin is nowadays present in more than 90
countries all around the world.
Main market as a whole is of course Europe,
second in place the Far East, but also the Russian
Federation and Indian Subcontinent are coming
out quite well lately, together with the Middle
East.
New markets of course are always a target for us
and many are the chances that Dorin is taking in
the emerging markets and not only.
ICE: How important are environmental issues to
your overall business strategy? Can you tell me
about the sustainability initiatives you have in
place?
Dorin first mission is to offer its partners product
that are not only perfect (its founder Sig. Mario
Dorin used to say …”the most important thing is
the each compressor must be perfect”… and this
is still Dorin basic mission) but also as much as
possible respectful of the environment surrounding
them.
The ambient in which we all leave is of a primary
importance, and issues like the latest happening
in north east USA and in Alaska (where local
temperature in January was over 5°C!!) are a
clear example that the Environment needs all the
attention a manufacturer can pay to it.
Hence Dorin is focusing on solutions that are
Silent, Secure and Safe, for people and for
environment. All our new projects, either for
improving already existing products as well
as creating new ones, have as main focus the
lowest environmental impact, in terms of power
consumption, impact on the atmosphere and
noise.
ICE: Have you made any major investments recently
or are any planned for the near future?
We have planned an implementation of the
structure in Fiesole, where it is located the
headquarter, in order to improve the production
process, to speed it and to increase the production
capacity.
Together with this project, Dorin has dedicated
energy, commitment and finance to external
production and commercial facilities in order to
shortening the line between itself and its partners.
This is giving the partners a better availability of
products, spare parts and of course technical
support.
ICE: Where do you think your future growth will
come from – through organic expansion or
through acquisitions? How do you see the
company developing over the next few years?
Obviously you cannot limit the opportunity that
occurs, and Dorin is of course always keeping
its eyes wide open for gathering each of them
if required. However, the Company is actually
focusing on an organic expansion more than
acquiring other realities. This is leading to a
stronger development of the basement of the
business, giving the partners always the feeling
that behind a Company brand there always is a
family owned reality. This fact is determinant in
making clear that persons are behind a brand,
totally committed persons from the fourth
generation of the company’s founder, Sig. Mario
Dorin.
Coupling this fact with the well trained and
dedicated collaborators, at all levels, in Dorin that

The conditions of storage for garlic closely resemble
those recommended for dry onions. Storage is

Thorough curing of garlic before storage is highly
important for satisfactory quality retention. If field
conditions for curing are unsatisfactory, garlic can be
artificially cured by blowing heated air at 110- 115°F
(43-46°C) through them for 8-12 hours. Incomplete
curing results in excessive decay, particularly when
bulbs are held above 32°F (0°C). Proper relative
humidity maintenance (60-70%) is highly important
to retain quality and prevent molding and growth
of roots. Garlic stored at humidity higher than 70%,
at any temperature, will probably mold, sprout, and
start to grow roots.
In California, where considerable garlic is grown, it
is also placed in common storage, where it may be
held 3-4 months or longer if the building is kept cool,
dry, and well ventilated. Early harvested garlic often
receives less curing and is not stored as long as more
mature garlic. Garlic treated with maleic hydrazide
before harvest for sprouting control has been stored
1 year at 32°F (0°C) with only about 10% weight
loss. Postharvest treatment with gamma irradiation
has provided similar sprout control when storage is at
32°F (0°C).
Garlic may also be stored slightly lower than 32°F
(0°C), near its freezing point (30.5°F). Controlled
atmospheres (< 0.5% O2 alone or in combination
with 5-10% CO2) will retard sprout development and
extend shelf life. Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage
may also retard development of waxy breakdown.
To maintain the highest quality, longest term
storage, dried, flaked, or powdered garlic should be
held between 22 to 32°F (-5 to 0°C); however, for
practical purposes, it can be held at 32°F (0°C). Since
dehydrated garlic is handled in sealed containers,
relative humidity is not an issue.
Garlic should not be stored with other products that
tend to absorb odors. It may be stored with onions.

Diseases and Disorders
Blue Mold Rot:
Garlic bulbs affected with this disease may
sometimes show little external evidence of
it. Early evidence is light yellow spots on the
fleshy scales, followed by white mold and
later blue spores. Affected bulbs will be light
in weight and the individual cloves will be
soft and spongy or powdery-dry. When in
advanced stage of decay, the cloves break
down completely into a dry bluish green or
gray powdery mass.
Control: None except careful inspection
prior to storage. If excessive mechanical
injury, freezing, or sunscald is noted, then
blue mold rot may be serious, especially if
there is insufficient aeration or ventilation,
and warehouse personnel should be on their
guard.
Waxy Breakdown:
Early symptoms of this physiological disorder
are small, slightly sunken, light yellow areas
in the flesh of the clove, the color deepening
later to yellow or amber. The clove is then
somewhat translucent sticky, and waxy,
but the outer scales are not affected. No
external evidence of disease may be noted
until it is well advanced.
Control: Nothing except careful inspection
before storage to avoid storing lots with this
disorder.

suggests Air-cooled semi-hermetic
compressor. The version has its motor
located outside the refrigerant path; in
other words the motor is cooled by an
external fan, unlike the conventional
refrigerant cooled compressors
wherein returning refrigerant cools the
motor.
The conventional refrigerant cooled
compressors rapidly reach their
application limits for deep-freeze
applications due to the temperature
rise of suction gas due to motor heat
dissipation in returning refrigerant.
Moreover, compressor too looses it`s
capacity as such. Traditionally, the
rise in temperature rise is limited by
installing a head cooling device/system;
a fan / liquid injection cooling etc.

ACREX India 2014: A
sustainable foundation
for Future India
ACREX India 2014 ended on a high-note with 30,000 visitors
from all across the country. Organized by the Indian Society
for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers
(ISHRAE) and managed by NuernbergMesse India, ACREX India
2014 was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 27th February
to 1st March, 2014. The expo was endorsed by ASHRAE and
supported by prestigious international industry bodies like UNEP,
REHVA, KRAIA, AHRI & CAR besides the Honourable Indian
Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.
ACREX India 2014 saw participation of 400 Exhibitors from more
than 25 different countries including Belgium, Czech Republic,
Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore,
Spain, Switzerland, also Taiwan, The Netherland, UK, UAE and
Ukraine. Besides this, the exhibition hosted country pavilions
from USA, Germany, Korea and China. ACREX India 2014
gained International significance by becoming a melting pot for
organizations like UNEP, CIBSE, EBTC & REHVA. UNEP held a
series of Roundtable Discussions with speakers from Government
of Bhutan, Italian Ministry of the Environment, Government of

minimize wastages in complete supply chain.
Visitors saw live operations of Multi-brand
retail, QSRs, bulk operations for agri-exporters
etc along with a live demo on Warehouse
Management System. MJ’s Cold Chain facility

Income tax officer gave tips to a young lady, “You should pay
your income tax with a smile.”
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the
bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was
lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As
the frozen bird lay there miserably in the pile of cow dung,
it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually
thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon
began to sing for joy.
The lady replied, “I have tried it thrice, but every time they
insist on cash or cheque.”

Reasons to allow drinking at work
The below are valid reasons as to why drinking should be
allowed at work. If you use them wisely, you may even be
able to convince your boss into allowing alcohol.
1.It’s an incentive to show up.
2.It reduces stress.
3.It leads to more honest communications.
4.It helps save on heating costs in the winter.
5.It eliminates vacations because people would rather come
to work.
6.It makes the cafeteria food taste better.
7.Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are
wasted.
8.Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
9.If someone does something stupid on the job, it will be
quickly forgotten.

Three kids argue, whose father is the fastes. One says:

- My father is even faster - when he hunts, he can gunshoot
an animal and run up to the animal before it fells down.

- You actually don’t understand what speed is. My father
works in municipality. He finishes work at 4:30 pm, but
he’s back home by 3:45 pm already
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Moral of the story :
1)Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.
2)Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
3)And when you are in deep shit, its best to keep your
