What is a Career Appraisal (MGN 11)
The Career Appraisal (CA) :
 Demonstrate satisfactory completion of Initial Professional
Development ( instead of ) ICE Training Agreement.
 Demonstrate your experience has given you the same basic
competencies as someone who has successfully completed TA.
 Not intended as an obstacle to qualification.
 Opportunity for assessment and counseling on how far you have
progressed towards the Professional Review.

Attributes and Development Objectives
Professional competence will be
assessed at the Professional
Review based on evidence of your
achievement of the Attributes but
achievement of the Development
Objectives must be demonstrated
first.

examples over career –

example)
Institution of Civil Engineers
Development Objectives:
Snapshots of your experience
• Project title, date and your role
• Particular challenge e.g. design of first floor structure for office building
• What were the options e.g. precast units, cast insitu, composite?
• Advantages/disadvantages of each option e.g. safety of construction,
• What decision did you make/contribute to and why?
• What did you learn?
• A,K,E or B ?
Career Appraisal Webinar UNCONTROLLED DOCUMENT
Institution of Civil Engineers
Development Objectives: Examples
One project or job can be developed through numerous DO’s: e.g.

B1 asks what is the problem and what are the options

B2 says go away and research those options to solve the problem.
Research can be from technical issues, safety, commercial, etc, etc.

B3 says what is your chosen option and go away and do it.

C1 says plan it

E2 says identify the hazards associated and mitigate against

B3 for a consultant could be from an outline design (from B2) produce
the detailed design, for a contractor ‘go and build’ the solution. And
evaluate = was it any good? Could I improve it next time?
Career Appraisal Webinar UNCONTROLLED DOCUMENT
Institution of Civil Engineers
Development Objectives: Examples
Need – provide support to excavation side

B1 asks what is the problem and what are the options – stability, loads,
permanent and temporary situation, safe construction?

B2 says go away and research those options to solve the problem. –
batter, anchor, nail, retaining wall – mass, concrete, steel?

B3 says what is your chosen option and go away and do it. – design of
r.c. retaining wall

C1 says plan it – timing, sequence, resources, critical path, method
statement

E2 says identify the hazards associated and mitigate against. – risk
assessment, redesign, alternative construction, control measures.

Institution of Civil Engineers
What do I have to produce? Evidence
 Typically 1-3 pieces of evidence per DO – do not need
to evidence every example you have written about
 Must be your own work – make sure your name is on it!
 Select evidence with care
 Failure to provide evidence will result in a request for
further information

Institution of Civil Engineers
Experience Report
• Start of your career
• Varied experience ; design, construction
• Responsibility
• Management & Leadership
• Lessons learnt
• Where you are now
• Articulate in your Experience Report
• Remember that for your Professional Review you have to write a 2000 word
experience report that addresses the Attributes.
• With some careful thinking and forward planning you 2000 word report for the
Career Appraisal, with some minor modifications, could serve two purposes.
Career Appraisal Webinar UNCONTROLLED DOCUMENT
Institution of Civil Engineers
Experience Report
Write in a good, professional report style with title page, index,
headings, sub-headings etc
In 2000 words describe tasks and responsibilities , NOT an inventory of
jobs
Set out the development of career, including precise positions and
degree of responsibilities
Discuss size/value of work, quantities etc
Emphasise your experience & contribution, clearly addressing
achievement of and cross reference to DOs

CPD - what is it?
Either:
 ‘off the job’
usually called a training course, a seminar, conference,
workshop, or
 ‘on the job’
– learning over a period of time - weeks or months.
– hand in hand with the experience gained by carrying out
your day job
– putting your theory and knowledge into practice and
gaining experience.

Areas of potential weakness that will
be looked for by your CA assessors
Career Appraisal Webinar UNCONTROLLED DOCUMENT
Institution of Civil Engineers
What will my assessors look for?

Your assessors will look for evidence that you
have demonstrated all the Development
Objectives so that you are well prepared to
undertake the Professional Review where you
will have to demonstrate achievement of all the
Attributes to the required standard

BUT they are mindful of those areas where the
Reviewers will probe in depth and where there
are concerns that many candidates are not well
prepared.

What are these areas?
Career Appraisal Webinar UNCONTROLLED DOCUMENT
Institution of Civil Engineers
What will my assessors look for in
particular?
1. Engineering knowledge, understanding and application and
ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES. See MGN 47
2. How you have exercised sound INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
both technical and non-technical
3. Evidence of your abilities in Management and Leadership and
knowledge, understanding and abilities in Commercial and
Contractual issues
4. Your knowledge of and commitment to HEALTH, SAFETY AND
WELFARE - See MGN 20
5. Your ability to communicate in good English - See MGN 21
