a) Discuss the importance of planning to the practice of management, list and describe the steps
in the formal planning process, and identify and discuss the major benefits of planning.
b) Distinguish between and provide examples of short-range, medium-range, and long-range
plans; strategic and operational plans; policies and procedures; and budgets and projects.
c) Explain how forecasting, contingency planning, scenario planning, benchmarking, use of
staff planners, and participation and involvement can contribute to planning
effectiveness.
d) Explain the importance of controlling in effective management, and list and describe the steps
in the control process.
e) Identify and discuss different types of controls, and compare and contrast internal versus
external control strategies.
f) Explain how management by objectives integrates planning and control, and how key
organizational systems  such as employee discipline systems, information and financial
controls, break-even analysis and operations management and control  promote control
of organizational activities.
