BIOTECHNOLOGY LETTERS
Instructions to Authors
How to submit
Papers must be submitted electronically via the Editorial Manager system. As Biotechnology Letters is a rapid
publication journal, no proofs are issued to authors. It is therefore imperative that authors ensure their papers are
accurate and comply with the following instructions as closely as possible. Further advice on how papers should
be written is given in our Guidance Notes for Authors which are available via our web page.
Manuscripts should preferably be submitted in the original file format. Please follow the hyperlink “Submit online”
on the right to open an e-mail to the editor and attach the files.
Please note that the normal limit of papers is six printed pages in the Journal; we are prepared to accept slightly
longer papers (8 pages) provided that the scientific content of the work justifies this.
Sections of the Journal
As the Journal now publishes papers in the following sections, authors must indicate on the title page to which
section their paper is being submitted. The sections are:

Biofuels and Environmental Biotechnology
Bioprocessing and Biological Engineering
Microbial and Enzyme Technology
Plant Cell Technology
Regenerative Medicine and Biomaterials
Only one section can be nominated. Please note that, if in the opinion of the Editor, the paper would be better
reviewed in a different section to the one indicated, the authors will be advised of this.
Reviews
Short reviews, or mini-reviews, are also published. These should be prepared according to the general
instructions given below. Authors should contact either the Senior Reviews Editor or Editor in Chief before
submitting a review to ensure that the subject will be considered appropriate for inclusion.

Manuscript Submission
Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before in whole or in part or
in any language; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been
approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute
where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any
claims for compensation.
Permissions
Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere by
another author are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format
and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material
received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors. Authors should note, however,
that they may re-use material that they themselves have previously published elsewhere without requiring
permission.
Title Page
The title page should include:
Section in which the paper is to be considered.
A concise and informative title (see Guidance Notes).
The name(s) of the author(s).
The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s) plus email addresses of all authors.
The email address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author (only one should be nominated).

Abstract
Please provide an abstract no more than 140 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined non-standard
abbreviation or unspecified references. Please also refer to the advice given in the Guidance Notes as to how an
Abstract should be presented. The Abstract is given as a single paragraph. It is very important the Abstract is
written as concisely as possible and gives quantitative values of all key results.
Keywords
Please provide 4 to 6 keywords which can be used for indexing purposes.
Mathematical notations and nomenclature
If used, these are placed before the Introduction.
Text
Text Formatting
Manuscripts should be submitted in Word. Please use full page width (~17 cm) for the text. All the text as well
as tables and figure legends should be in double-spaced typing.
Use a normal, plain font (e.g., 10-point Times Roman) for text.
Use the automatic page numbering function to number all the pages, including tables, figure legends, figures and
any supplementary data.
Do not use field functions.
Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the space bar.
Use the table function, not spreadsheets, to make tables.
Use the equation editor or MathType for equations.
Note: If you use Word 2007, do not create the equations with the default equation editor but use the Microsoft
equation editor or MathType instead.

Save your file in doc format. Do not submit docx files.

Headings
Please use no more than three levels of displayed headings. These should not be numbered.
Abbreviations
Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter. Authors can, of course, use
standard abbreviations without definition. The number of abbreviations, however, should be kept to a minimum
and only be used where useful saving of space will result.
Footnotes
Footnotes can be used to give additional information. They should normally be confined to the title page. Any
footnote to the text should be numbered in superscript lower case letters.
Acknowledgments
Acknowledgments of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section at the end of the text and
before the reference list. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.
Scientific style

Further information concerning the preferred scientific style to be used is given in the Guidance Notes which are
also available via our website. Please always use internationally accepted signs and symbols for units and SI

units. The policy of the journal is to use litre (l) instead of dm ; molar concentrations are given as M, mM etc. not

mol 1 or mmol 1 . Concentrations are to be given as 10 g glucose 1 (or 10 g glucose/l) and not 10 g/l glucose
which is incorrect. Please do not use the double solidus: thus 10 g/l/h is incorrect and should be either 10 g/l h

or 10 g l h . New contributors to this Journal are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Journal by
consulting some recently published papers.
Genus and species names should be in italics and the full binomial name should be given in full at the first
mention. If more than one genus name is being used with the same initial letter, then these must be
distinguished by additional letters; for example, Staph. aureus and Strept. pyogenes.
Citation
Cite references in the text by name and year in parentheses. Some examples:
Negotiation research spans many disciplines (Thompson 2008).
This result was later contradicted by Becker and Seligman (2006).
This effect has been widely studied (Abbott 2010; Barakat et al. 2005; Kelso & Smith 2009; Medvec et al. 2007 a,
b).
Please ensure that you have cross-checked all cited references with those given in the list of references.
Reference list
The list of references should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or
accepted for publication. Personal communications and unpublished works should only be mentioned in the text;
these should give the initials and name of all people involved together with the address if this is different to that of
the corresponding author of the paper.
Do not use footnotes or endnotes as a substitute for a reference list.
Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work.

Dissertations should not be cited as a primary reference service as these are not usually accessible.
Journal titles
Always use the standard abbreviation of a journal’s name according to the ISSN List of Title Word Abbreviations,
see www.issn.org/2-22661-LTWA-online.php
Tables
It is very important that tabulated data should be understandable by the reader without recourse to the text. To
this end, experimental information should be given in footnotes to the table rather than in the Methods and
materials section. This information needs to be written with the greatest clarity and conciseness.
All tables are to be numbered subsequently using Arabic numerals.
Tables should always be cited in the text in consecutive numerical order. The position for the table should be

indicated by a marginal note in the text.
For each table, please supply a table caption (title) explaining the components of the table. This goes at the top
of the table.
Identify any previously published material that is relevant by giving the original source in the form of a reference
citation at the end of the table caption.
Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and
other statistical data) and included beneath the table body.
The attention of authors is also drawn to the information provided in the Guidance Notes as to how data in
Tables should be presented.
Tables are preferably to be designed to be printed at a single column width (7.5 cm) in the Journal. When this is
not possible, a double column format (16 cm width) should be presented. Only in exceptional circumstances can
tables be printed in a landscape format (21 cm width). All tables, including footnotes, are to be in double
spacing,
Tables, when necessary, can be typed on more pages; these should then be labelled as “page 1 of 3” etc.
Values in tables (as well as in the text) must not be given beyond the inherent accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the
experimental method being used. Non-significant zeros should not be given. Vertical rulings in the tables should
not be used and horizontal lines must be kept to a minimum.
Relative values (as %) need to be explained in the legend as their absolute (100%) quantitative value.
If you are using supplementary tables in your article, these are numbered (Supplementary Table 1, etc.) in a new
and separate sequence from those in the main text. Do not number the supplementary tables as part of the main
sequence. Supplementary tables and other data are placed after the main text, tables and figures.
Artwork Guidelines
Legends to figures are given on a separate page preceeding the figures themselves. Please place the figures and
legends after the tables.

It is important that the information given in the figures is understandable by the reader without recourse to the text. To

Figure Numbering
All figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals. Figures should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical
order. Figure parts should be denoted by lower case letters (a, b, c, etc.) The position for each figure should be
indicated by a marginal note in the text.
If you are using supplementary figures in your article, these are numbered (Supplementary Figure 1, etc.) in a new and
separate sequence from those in the main text. Do not number the supplementary figures as part of the main sequence.
Supplementary figures are placed at the end of the submission, after any supplementary tables and other data.
Figure Captions
Each figure should have a concise caption describing accurately what the figure depicts. Include the captions in the
text file of the manuscript, not in the figure file.
Figure captions begin with the term Fig. in bold type, followed by the figure number, also in bold type.
No punctuation is to be included after the number, nor is any punctuation to be placed at the end of the caption.
Identify all elements found in the figure in the figure caption; and use boxes, circles, etc., as coordinate points in graphs.
Identify previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the
figure caption.
Figure Placement and Size
When preparing your figures, please size the figures to fit in the column width. Figures should be designed to be
printed preferably at single column width (75 mm) but if this is not possible then at double column width (160 mm) and

not higher than 234 mm. Figures should avoid having large areas of blank space.
Figure Lettering
To add lettering, it is best to use Helvetica or Arial (sans serif fonts).
Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 2–3 mm (8–12 pt).
Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal, e.g., do not use 8-pt type on an axis and 20-pt type
for the axis label.
Avoid effects such as shading, outline letters, etc.
Do not include titles or captions within your figures/ illustrations.
For the best quality final product, it is highly recommended that you submit all of your artwork – photographs, line
drawings, etc. – in an electronic format. Your art will then be produced to the highest standards with the greatest accuracy
to detail. The published work will directly reflect the quality of the artwork provided.
Electronic Figure Submission
Supply all figures electronically.
Indicate what graphics program was used to create the artwork.
For vector graphics, the preferred format is EPS; for halftones, please use TIFF format. MS Office files are also acceptable.
Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Name your figure files with "Fig" and the figure number, e.g., Fig1.eps.
Line Art

Definition: Black and white graphic with no shading.
Do not use faint lines and/or lettering and check that all lines and lettering within the figures are legible at final size.
All lines should be at least 0.1 mm (0.3 pt) wide.
Scanned line drawings and line drawings in bitmap format should have a minimum resolution of 1200 dpi. However,
authors must be very careful when using print-outs from instrument recorders; these are often not good enough for
publication. When necessary, these must be re-drawn to a higher standard.
Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Halftone Art
Definition: Photographs, drawings, or paintings with fine shading, etc.
If any magnification is used in the photographs, indicate this by using scale bars within the figures themselves. The
size of the scale bar is then to be given in the legend to the figure.
Halftones should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

Combination Art
Definition: a combination of halftone and line art, e.g., halftones containing line drawing, extensive lettering, color
diagrams, etc.
Combination artwork should have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi.

Color Art
Color art is free of charge for online publication.
If black and white will be shown in the print version, make sure that the main information will still be visible. Many colors
are not distinguishable from one another when converted to black and white. A simple way to check this is to make a
xerographic copy to see if the necessary distinctions between the different colors are still apparent.
If the figures will be printed in black and white, do not refer to color in the captions.
Color illustrations should be submitted as RGB (8 bits per channel).
Permissions
If you include figures that have already been published elsewhere, you must obtain permission from the copyright
owner(s) for both the print and online format. Please be aware that some publishers do not grant electronic rights for
free and that Springer will not be able to refund any costs that may have occurred to receive these permissions. In such
cases, material from other sources should be used. Authors should, however, note that they can use their own previously
published figures without permission and without infringement of copyright.
Supplementary material
Material that is peripheral to the main subject matter of the paper can be presented either as tables and figures.
This information will be printed online and will always be so available, but it will not be printed in the Journal itself.
As a consequence, there is no limit to the number of tables, figures and amount of other data that can be given in
this way. Additional textual information can also be included.
Data such as the procedures used for bacterial isolation and identification should be given in this way. Data for
determining kinetic parameters of reactions are also appropriate for inclusion. Information giving lists of base
sequences used in PCR work, vectors, etc., should be placed here. Gene sequences, partial or whole, should
also be given here as these are not normally printed in the Journal. Original chromatograms (HPLC, column,
TLC and GC) should be given here; NMR spectra, MS and LC-MS raw data are also appropriate for inclusion.
All pages, including tables, figure legends and figures, should be numbered in sequence following on from the
final page of the main manuscript.

Electronic Supplementary Material
Springer accepts electronic multimedia files (animations, movies, audio, etc.) and other supplementary
files to be published online along with an article or a book chapter. This feature can add dimension to
the author's article, as certain information cannot be printed or is more convenient in electronic form.
Submission
Supply all supplementary material in standard file formats.
Please include in each file the following information: article title, journal name, author names; affiliation
and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
To accommodate user downloads, please keep in mind that larger-sized files may require very long
download times and that some users may experience other problems during downloading.
Audio, Video, and Animations
Always use MPEG-1 (.mpg) format.
Text and Presentations
Submit your material in PDF format; .doc or .ppt files are not suitable for long-term viability.
A collection of figures may also be combined in a PDF file.
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheets should be converted to PDF if no interaction with the data is intended.
If the readers should be encouraged to make their own calculations, spreadsheets should be submitted
as .xls files (MS Excel).
Specialized Formats

Specialized format such as .pdb (chemical), .wrl (VRML), .nb (Mathematica notebook), and .tex can
also be supplied.
Collecting Multiple Files
It is possible to collect multiple files in a .zip or .gz file.
Numbering
If supplying any supplementary material, the text must make specific mention of the material as a
citation, similar to that of figures and tables.
Refer to the supplementary files as “Online Resource”, e.g., "... as shown in the animation (Online
Resource 3)", “... additional data are given in Online Resource 4”.
Name the files consecutively, e.g. “ESM_3.mpg”, “ESM_4.pdf”.
Captions
For each supplementary material, please supply a concise caption describing the content of the file.
Processing of supplementary files
Electronic supplementary material will be published as received from the author without any
conversion, editing, or reformatting.
Accessibility
In order to give people of all abilities and disabilities access to the content of your supplementary files,
please make sure that
The manuscript contains a descriptive caption for each supplementary material
Video files do not contain anything that flashes more than three times per second (so that users prone
to seizures caused by such effects are not put at risk)

After acceptance
After acceptance
Upon acceptance of your article you will receive a link to the special Author Query Application at Springer’s web page
where you can sign the Copyright Transfer Statement online and indicate whether you wish to order OpenChoice and
paper offprints. Once the Author Query Application has been completed, your article will be further processed.
Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is
granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option:
Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article,
but in addition is made available publicly through Springer’s online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open
Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.

Copyright transfer
Authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher (or grant the Publisher exclusive publication and
dissemination rights). This will ensure the widest possible protection and dissemination of information under copyright laws.
Open Choice articles do not require transfer of copyright as the copyright remains with the author. In opting for open access,
they agree to the Springer Open Choice Licence.
Offprints
Additional offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author.
Color illustrations
Publication of color illustrations is free of charge.
Online First
The article will be published online after transfer of copyright (if applicable; see Open Choice). This is the official first
publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers.
Proof reading

No proofs are issued to authors. It is therefore imperative that the text of a submitted paper be thoroughly checked before
submission. Proofs are, however, checked by the publisher (not the editor). Any serious corrections to be made after online
publication will require the publication of a separate Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
Language
Articles and abstracts must be in English. Both American (USA) or British spellings are allowed but their usage must be
consistent throughout the manuscript.
Springer Open Choice™
Your Research. Your Choice.
Springer operates a program called Springer Open Choice. It offers authors to have their journal articles made
available with full open access in exchange for payment of a basic fee ('article processing charge').
With Springer Open Choice the authors decide how their articles are published in the leading and well respected
journals that Springer publishes. Springer continues to offer the traditional publishing model, but for the growing
number of researchers who want open access, Springer journals offer the option to have articles made available
with open access, free to anyone, any time, and anywhere in the world. If authors choose open access in the
Springer Open Choice program, they will not be required to transfer their copyright.
Whatever the decision, an author’s work will always benefit from all Springer has to offer. There is no difference
in the way that they are treated between Springer Open Choice articles and other articles among the well over
100,000 that Springer publishes annually. All articles will be peer-reviewed, professionally produced, and
available both in print and in electronic versions on SpringerLink. In addition, every article will be registered in
CrossRef and included in the appropriate Abstracting and Indexing services. Springer Open Choice articles will
have the possibility of incorporating additional non-text files such as sound or video in the electronic edition.
