Oregon Recreational Boating
Accident Statistics – 2004
The following statistics were taken from boating accident reports received by the State Marine Board for 2004.
Accidents involving death, injury, or property damage exceeding $2,000 must be reported.
Comments on the year...
In 2004, there were 54 recreational boating accidents in Oregon. Of the 54 accidents, 9 people (42 percent)
died which is half the number of fatalities we had in 2003 with 18 fatalities.
Three of the 9 victims were wearing life jackets the majority of the accidents happened on the Columbia River.
One thing that is unique for the 4 of the 9 people who died, was the fact that the ‘Activity’ was waterskiing.
The most common ‘Activity’ in past years for fatalities has been fishing and cruising.
Another item to note is that the first fatality did not happen until the month of May.
No fatalities on the ocean. About 30 percent typically occur on the ocean, most often on the bar.
