Oregon Recreational Boating
Accident Statistics – 2010
The following statistics were taken from boating accident reports received by the State Marine Board for 2010.
Accidents involving death, injury, or property damage exceeding $2,000 must be reported.
Comments on the year…..
In 2010, 12 people died in recreational boating accidents in Oregon.
Two of the 12 victims were wearing their life jackets. It is reasonable to assume that had the other victims
worn their life jackets most would have survived their accidents.
Six of the 12 victims were in open motor boats. The other six were in non-powered craft. On average, 35%
of our fatalities are in non-motorized boats.
Seven of the 12 operators were over the age of 50. This is the second year in a row where over half the
operators were in this age group.
This year there was a tie for the number one type of accident. Both Capsizing and Falls Overboard
counted five, followed by one each for Collision with Fixed Object and Flooding/Swamping.
