Welcome from Bishop Burkat
So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off
and peace to those who were near …Ephesians 2:17
Ever since Martin Luther engaged students in
theological discussion over beer, supper and informal
conversion (Table Talk 1566), church leaders have tried
various ways to invite both believers and seekers to
explore faith and life conversations outside the Sunday
worship experience. Bryan Berghoef, Christian
Reformed pastor, writer and pub theologian has discovered new arenas to bring
lively discussion for those desiring a place to belong, commune and to be
challenged by the intersection of faith and practice. Pastor Berghoef will share his
learning and principles for getting out of the Church building and into the
community at our 2015 Convocation.
Barbara K. Lundblad, ELCA pastor, author, speaker, theologian and renowned
homiletician is Professor of Preaching Emerita at Union Theological Seminary and
frequent contributor to Day 1, the Protestant radio hour and podcast. Barbara will
be our preacher, presenter and chaplain at our 2015 convocation, sharing Biblical
and theological insights on how God has called and often pushed the people of God
out of the safety of the Temple and into the tumult of the Tent.
We will be blessed to have with us these two presenters who will also lead us in a
sampling of out of the church building experiences. I look forward to this time apart
with rostered leaders for worship, conversation and renewal. I encourage you to
register for the 2015 Convocation, and please invite your colleagues, especially
those new to our Synod to our new location Bear Creek Resort and Conference
Center in Macungie, PA.
Bryan Berghoef
Bryan Berghoef is a pastor, writer, and pub theologian,
and author of the book, Pub Theology: Beer,
Conversation, and God. He insists that good things
happen when we sit around the table together and talk
about things that matter, and what better setting than
at the pub, over a pint. Bryan has been facilitating
weekly pub conversations for the past seven years, and
has been a church planter in Traverse City, Michigan
and Washington, DC. Bryan is a graduate of the
University of Michigan and Calvin Theological Seminary
and has been ordained in the Christian Reformed Church since 2005. He and his
wife Christy currently live in Holland, MI with their four children.
Barbara K. Lundblad
Barbara K. Lundblad is the Joe R. Engle Professor of
Preaching Emerita at Union Theological Seminary.
Holder of a B.A. from Augustana College and a
Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School,
she is also the recipient of numerous honorary
doctorates. An ordained pastor of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America, she served for sixteen
years as Pastor of Our Saviour’s Atonement
Lutheran Church in New York City. While teaching
at Union she also served as Pastoral Associate at
Advent Lutheran Church in Manhattan.
