20. 다음 글에서 Kerry가 겪은 심경의 변화로 가장 적절한 것은?
The room was so silent that one could have heard a pin
drop. Kerry watched as the verdict was passed over to
the judge. He opened the envelope. At the sound of paper
tearing, her heart was thumping. The judge cleared his
throat, and drew in a breath of air. “After hearing from
both sides in this court, and listening to all the events
throughout the past five years, the court has decided to
rule in favor of Mr. Paul Martin,” the judge announced.
Kerry felt the ground fall from beneath her. She was
speechless. Now all was lost.

다음 글을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.
If people want to be successful in multinational
business, they must understand the cultures of other
countries and learn how to adapt to them. It’s important
for them to avoid business decisions that are based on
misconceptions―mistaken ideas. One cause of them is
the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is
better than the way of other cultures. To avoid this, it’s
necessary to study the elements of culture.
A knowledge of the local (A) can help an inter̵
national businessperson in some ways. First, the person
can communicate directly, without someone else to
translate or explain. Moreover, people are usually more
open in their communication with someone who speaks
their language.
(B) influences everything about people, including
their work habits. In the United States, people talk about
the Protestant work ethic, which simply means a belief
that people should work hard and save their money. In
many Asian countries, the same idea is called the
Confucian work ethic.
International businesses need to understand the
(C) of other countries, or they will probably have
difficulty selling their products. For example, an
American orange juice company in France will have a
problem if it sells orange juice as a breakfast drink
because the French don’t drink juice with breakfast.

다음 글을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.
(A)
Sometimes I get mail from kids whom I have taught in
my writing class. They talk about their school, friends,
family, and even dating and love! I smile at their stories,
replying to their mail. One thing I notice in each piece of
mail is that they all use strange language. People say
that it’s part of Internet culture and Internet users like to
speak this colloquial language.
(B)
But what I really worry about is that the new
language used by the youth on the Internet is becoming
even more common than proper Korean. The strange
language has already made its way into the children’s
diaries and homework. When they become grown-ups,
two different languages might be used in Korea. They
might think Korean used by older generations is an alien
language. It’s really scary just imagining it.
(C)
However, the language sounds strange to me. They
mix Chinese characters, Japanese characters, numbers, and
symbols in a strange way, and I can’t figure out what
they are trying to say. It is a scary thing. Beyond
distorting and abbreviating words, it completely destroys
the existing language. Some people say I shouldn’t take it
so seriously. They think it’s funny and it’s just a trend
among young people online. At any age, the young
generation has always wanted to create its own world,
separate from the older generations.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his
son bought for him. A young man beside him saw the
hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is!
Where did you get it?” The old man said, “My son
bought it at H. S. department store for me.” The
young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the
hat and yelled, “A few weeks ago, I bought the same
hat at H. S. department store and stuck my calling
card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other
day. Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must
be mine. Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man
and said, “In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in
a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and
dropped this hat unconsciously. You are insisting that
this hat is yours. Thank God, you can take your lost
hat and I can take my stolen cow back.” At this the
young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a
moment? Nature calls me.” The young man stood up
and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He
never returned!

The next time Christmas came, the pine tree was
the first tree to be cut down. The tree rejoiced to
think it was at last to be taken and made beautiful
with decorations. The pine tree was taken by truck to
a large, beautiful house and placed in a tub filled with
sand. There, people hung it with beautiful ornaments
and fastened (b) a lot of colored bulbs to its branches.
“If only they would light the bulbs,” thought the proud
tree. “How splendid I would look!”
Finally, the bulbs were lit and the tree became
(c) a sparkling, glittering mass. The tree was very
proud of its beauty. “If only the other trees in the
forest could see me now, how envious they would be!”
thought the tree.
But Christmas was soon over and the pine tree was
discarded and thrown into the yard. It lay there sadly,
(d) its dry needles falling off one by one. Finally, a
man came and chopped it up for firewood. In the
fireplace, the wood blazed brightly, but it sighed so
deeply that every sigh was like the short explosion from
a gun. The tree thought of (e) its life in the forest as it
burned and turned into ashes.

Far into the forest stood a little pine tree. Since it had
plenty of fresh air and sunshine, it grew well. When
Christmas came, many young trees were cut. “Where are
they going?” the pine tree asked. “They are going to
(a)the town,” twittered the sparrows. “There they are
dressed in gold and silver and placed in the middle of
warm rooms and the children worship them.” “How I
wish that would happen to me!” sighed the tree. “My
sweet, you already have real blessings!” said the sun,
but the tree did not understand. The pine tree was
restless and impatient and always wanted to get away.
